Full-time: Atalanta 4-1 Dortmund (4-3 on aggregate)

Atalanta win it in the most dramatic fashion. The game looked destined for extra-time after Adeyemi's wonder strike, but a last-second penalty from Samardžić sends the Serie A side through to the Champions League last 16 at Dortmund's expense. They'll either play Bayern Munich or Arsenal in the next round of the competition.

Atalanta have surely won it!

It's heartbreak for Dortmund. Samardžić's penalty is flawlessly drilled into the top corner, well beyond Kobel's reach. The Italians are heading for the last 16...

Atalanta want a penalty!

The Serie A side break away on the counter. A shot from Pašalić is well saved by Kobel, but on the follow-up, Krstović is taken out by Bensebaini. The ref goes over to check the VAR screen and subsequently sends off the BVB defender!

Dortmund's savour?

Another moment of magic from Adeyemi in added-time would surely win the tie for Dortmund

Three minutes added on

Not long left here. If nothing changes from now until the full-time whistle, 30 minutes of extra-time awaits both sets of players.
87'

Sulemana enters the game

The former Southampton winger replaces Zalewski for the final few minutes. Can his speed trouble Dortmund on the counter?
83'

Both sides push for a winner

Adeyemi almost works another big opportunity, but several Atalanta defenders scramble well to turn away his cut-back inside the penalty area. While the hosts are still trying to create chances of their own, Dortmund are enjoying the lion's share of possession as we head into the closing moments of normal time.
80'

Samardžić almost wins it!

The forward takes inspiration from Adeyemi and goes on a mazy run of his own. After evading several challenges inside the BVB box, he shoots powerfully, but his effort is just off-target. It's a big let-off for the German side.
camera-photo

Brilliant goal from Adeyemi!

What an impact from the substitute! He picks the ball up at the edge of the Atalanta box, cuts inside wonderfully, and bends his shot with precision beyond the outstretched keeper. As things stand, we're heading for extra-time.

Defensive changes for Atalanta

Scamacca, who scored the opening goal of the game, goes off the pitch to a rapturous reception. Ahanor and Kristović are subbed on to try and close out the win.
70'

Adeyemi comes on for Dortmund

The German international replaces Bellingham, who was beginning to tire in the middle of the park. Dortmund now have three goalscorers on the pitch in the form of Adeyemi, Guirassy and Silva.

Atalanta continue to frustrate

The hosts continue to make things uncomfortable for Dortmund. In the last few moments, Bellingham and Ryerson have given away fouls, in what could be a small sign that frustration beginning to creep in.
camera-photo

Double change from Kovać

The BVB boss brings on Silva and Chukwuemeka in his search for a way back into this game. Silva, who replaces the lively Beier, scored a 95th minute equaliser against RB Leipzig last weekend.
camera-photo

Atalanta make it three!

It's a bitter blow for Dortmund, who came so close to scoring moments ago. De Roon curls a wonderful cross into the BVB box, and Pašalić is there to glance the ball into the far corner of the net with his head. BVB now need a goal, as they are 30 minutes away from being knocked out of the Champions League.

Beier hits the post!

The visitors are getting closer to scoring with every shot! Beier does superbly well down the right channel, powering his way into the box with purpose. He shoots from a tight angle, but his side-footed effort agonisingly cannons off the far post and rolls away for a goal kick. Guirassy very nearly had a tap-in on the follow-up. Inches away...

Almost from Guirassy!

Dortmund go right down the other end of the pitch and create their best chance of the game. Brandt squeezes the ball into the feet of Guirassy in the Atalanta box, who chests it down, unleashes a lovely swivel shot. It looks destined for the corner of the net, but Carnesecchi expertly claws it to safety. They're still a threat when they do manage to get forward.
47'

Atalanta are back in control

The half is only a few minutes old, but the Serie A side are already looking dangerous. Zalewski gets to the byline but can't quite steer the ball into the path of Scamacca.
46'

The ball is rolling again

Here we go then. Dortmund have 45 minutes to save their Champions League campaign.
Kick-off!

Will we see Schlotterbeck in the second half?

Dortmund have struggled at the back tonight, but there is no sign of the German international coming on just yet.
camera-photo

Half-time: Atalanta 2-0 Dortmund (2-2 on aggregate)

It's a dream half for Atalanta, who have already overturned their first-leg deficit. Dortmund have struggled to get going tonight, as, barring a couple of decent openings for Brandt and Guirassy, they've been second best throughout. While Zappacosta's goal just before the break was a tad fortunate for the hosts, they are good value for the 2-0 lead, having created a host of other chances. Dortmund need a big second half to turn the tide here.
camera-photo

Zappacosta doubles Atalanta's lead!

Bensebaini's night goes from bad to worse. The ball falls to Zappacosta at the edge of the BVB box. He shoots at goal, but his effort takes a wicked deflection off Bensebaini and flies into the net. Dortmund's first leg lead is cancelled out on the stroke of half-time.

A penny for Kovać's thoughts

38'

Zalewski not far away

Dortmund lose the ball again in the build up, and the ball arrives at the feet of Zalewski on the left side again. He shifts the ball onto his right foot and tries to pick out the far corner of the net with a shot from range. It just whizzes wide, but it's yet another warning for BVB.
34'

Scalvini ventures forward

The defender unexpectedly finds himself unmarked in the Dortmund box after being picked out with a long ball. He tries to cut the ball back inside the six-yard box to an onrushing attacker, but Bellingham does well to prevent the pass from reaching its intended target.
camera-photo

Atalanta's danger man

Can Dortmund keep Scamacca quiet for the rest of the game?
29'

Brandt works the keeper!

This is much better from BVB, who have picked up the pace in the last five minutes or so. Beier is the instigator again, this time threading a through-ball to Brandt, who picks up a pocket of space inside the Atalanta box. The German shoots first time, forcing a decent save from Carnesecchi who reacted well.
27'

Chance for Guirassy

It's a nice move from Dortmund, who finally work the ball well in the final third. Beier whips in a cross from the left corner of the Atalanta box, picking out Guirassy at the far post, who heads it narrowly wide. You get the feeling they'll need to score tonight in order to progress to the last 16.
23'

Dortmund under pressure

The home side are pushing right up the pitch, not allowing their opponents to build any momentum. Another tireless press almost leads to a second Atalanta goal. Scamacca lays the ball off inside the penalty area for Zalewski, whose arrowed shot is excellently turned around the post by Kobel. These are nervy moments for BVB...
18'

Atalanta threaten again

After a cross from Samardžić, Bernasconi gets to the ball on the left in the penalty area and brings it into the middle with his first touch. Fortunately for Dortmund, Can can clear the ball in the nick of time.
14'

Bensebaini booked

The BVB defender has had a poor start to the game. Zappacosta is played in down the channel, but Bensebaini arrives very late to slide tackle him, taking the man instead of the ball. He picks up an early yellow and will now be walking a tightrope for the rest of the match.

Dortmund finally get on the ball

After a very rocky start, Kovać's side are beginning to enjoy some possession. However, for the time being they're struggling to make any inroads in the final third, as Atalanta are well organised.
camera-photo

Early lead for the hosts!

It's a disastrous start for Dortmund. Once again Atalanta pose a threat down the left channel, with a fizzing ball into the middle of the box finding an unmarked Scamacca at the far post - who tucks the ball home with ease. Bensebaini tried in vain to cut the ball out, but could only toe it into the path of the Italian striker.
4'

Big save from Kobel!

Atalanta are straight on the front foot here. The Italians work the ball well down the left channel, with Zalewski eventually pulling the trigger from a tight angle. Koebl gets a big hand to the ball and turns it away to safety.
1'

We're underway!

Atalanta get things going in Bergamo. The hosts are in their black and blue home kit, while BVB are in all yellow.

More on that Atalanta team

Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino has made four changes for the visit of Dortmund. Scalvini and Isak Hien come into the backline, alongside former Hertha Berlin youngster Samardžić in midfield. Éderson, Djimsiti and Kossounou all drop out of the starting XI, and are instead among the substitutes.

More on that Dortmund team

Schlotterbeck is only fit enough for the Dortmund bench this evening after a minor fitness setback. Silva is also among the subs after his late heroics against RB Leipzig last time out. Kovać only makes one change from the side that won 2-0 in the first leg, with captain Can in for Reggiani.

Watch: Kovač plays it cool ahead of crunch second leg

camera-photo

What happens next?

Dortmund will focus on the job in hand tonight, of course, but should they see through their lead in the tie against Atalanta, a huge last 16 clash next month would be in store. Friday's draw would determine whether Dortmund face English Premier League leaders Arsenal or, wait for it, Bayern Munich in the next round.
camera-photo

Raffaele Palladino on facing Dortmund

"It's going to be a difficult mission, we know that, but we will give it our all. We must play with quality and have faith both in our style of football and in ourselves. I want to see us push from first minute to last. A 2-0 scoreline is hard to overturn, but with 90 minutes or more, we can try to cause a few headaches. We need to be sharp and make the most of the fact we've got 20,000 fans behind us."
camera-photo

Niko Kovač on facing Atalanta

"We have a good chance. We have to play our game, as we did in Dortmund. We have to push ourselves to the limit and try to repeat the positive aspects of the first leg. We don't want to simply manage the result; playing for a 0-0 draw is never really an option. If we can get an early goal it would bring us a lot of confidence...There will be singing for 90 minutes. And they will certainly get all the support they need to put in a good performance.”
camera-photo

Do you remember?

Dortmund faced Atalanta in the round of 32 of the 2017/2018 UEFA Europa League. Just like this time, Dortmund took a home win in the first leg (Michy Batshuayi scoring twice in a 3-2 win) before a vital Marcel Schmelzer strike earned a 1-1 draw in Italy that took the Black and Yellows through.
camera-photo

Guirassy gets Champions League goals

The striker's early first-leg opener was his fourth goal of the current UEFA Champions League campaign - and 17th in just 23 appearances in the competition for Dortmund.
camera-photo

Good news for Dortmund

Dortmund's defensive options looked to be improving ahead of the crunch tie with Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can training on Tuesday, a day ahead of the match - and both were then named in Dortmund's matchday squad.
camera-photo

Expert interceptors

Atalanta and Dortmund are both in the top four clubs for ball recoveries in the current UEFA Champions League season, with the Italian side in third with 394 and Dortmund just eight recoveries behind.

Early Atalanta team news

The Italian side will be without De Ketelaere and Raspadori for the clash against Dortmund - both of whom are out of action for several weeks. Scamacca and Éderson are expected to return to the starting XI after being rested against Napoli at the weekend.
camera-photo

Early Dortmund team news

BVB are likely to be without two key players in Bergamo, as Can (groin) has been out for weeks due to injury, while Schlotterbeck (muscular) faces a race against time to prove his fitness. Silva might hope to play a role after his late heroics against Leipzig.

Good omen?

Dortmund have progressed the last two times they won a home first leg in the Champions League, against PSG in 2024 and Lille last year (pictured). In total, they have advanced 21 times after winning the first leg on their own turf, going out on 17 occasions.
camera-photo

100 wins

The first leg saw Dortmund produce their 100th win in the Champions League/European Cup since they first beat Spora Luxemburg 4-3 in August 1956. They have reached a century in 206 games, with 40 draws and 66 defeats, following Bayern Munich as the only German clubs to reach 100 victories in Europe's top club competition.

Kehl: "It's only half-time"

Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: "I'm happy but still level-headed, because I know we're only at half-time [in the tie]. We've got a very tough task next week in Bergamo. We saw today that Atalanta are a good team and will pose a challenge there. We need to prepare for a huge fight next week. We need to be on it from the start. Only then will we progress to the next round."
camera-photo

Brandt: "We can be happy"

Dortmund's Julian Brandt, speaking after the first leg: "On the whole, we're pleased and head to Bergamo next week with confidence. I would've liked if we'd got another goal in the second half. A 2-0 [advantage] is a bit treacherous but also gives us some security, because we kept a clean sheet and scored two goals. We can generally be happy with the game."
camera-photo

Kovač "pleased" with first leg

Speaking after his team's first-leg victory, Dortmund boss Niko Kovač said: "I'm very pleased. We played good football, scored two goals and did good work in the second half. We've worked very hard on some things that we did well tonight. Serhou scored a goal and provided an assist. That's exactly what we need."
camera-photo

Advantage BVB

Dortmund head to Italy holding a 2-0 lead from last Tuesday's first leg at Signal Iduna Park. Serhou Guirassy and Maximilian Beier both struck in the first half to put the Bundesliga club in pole position to advance to the last 16.
