It’s going to be extremely tough for BVB to get something from this one, 2-0 down at the break and with just ten men on the pitch following Svensson’s red card. Niko Kovač’s men had a couple of bright moments early on as Adeyemi threatened to cause trouble on the break, but Tottenham have looked very dangerous going forward, particularly down the right, and it’s hard to argue that they don’t deserve their lead.

Tottenham get forward well on the break down the right, culminating in a teasing cross into the middle looking for Xavi. Svensson reads the danger though and slides in just ahead of the former Leipzig attacker to clear for a corner.

Another former Bundesliga player to keep an eye on tonight is Spurs forward Randal Kolo Muani, who lit up Germany's top flight in 2022/23 with 15 goals in 32 league appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Free-scoring Dortmund

Although in the Bundesliga, Dortmund are perhaps best known at the moment for their superb defensive displays, the Champions League has been completely different. They are currently the joint top scorers in the competition with 19 goals and have scored exactly four goals on four separate occasions (Juventus (4-4), Athletic Club (4-1), Copenhagen (4-2) and Villarreal (4-0).

Spurs are facing an injury crisis with only 11 first-team outfield players available, with ex-Leipzig playmaker Xavi likely to start despite being troubled by a swollen ankle, but former Bayern attacker Mathys Tel has not been named in the squad for the encounter.

Latest Dortmund team news

Marcel Sabitzer has been ruled out with his calf injury, but Aarón Anselmino and Ramy Bensebaini are expected to be included in the Dortmund squad after both training on Monday and travelling to London.

Kovač's happy return?

The Dortmund boss has fond memories of the dugout in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - having overseen a thumping 7-2 win as Bayern coach in the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League group stage. Serge Gnabry hit four goals in London that night and Bayern went on to lift the trophy, but only after Kovač left his role the following month.

After competing for Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, Ramy Bensebaini is back with the Dortmund squad, but illness kept him out of the Pauli game - he may have recovered in time for this fixture, though.

Despite their solid standing in the Champions League, Spurs have struggled massively in the Premier League. In their game on Saturday, they lost 2-1 at home to relegation-threatened West Ham. Spurs currently sit 14th.

Tottenham's ex-Bundesliga group

The Tottenham squad is packed full of players who have played in the Bundesliga. Xavi Simons joined the club from RB Leipzig in the summer, whereas Mathys Tel (former Bayern) and Randal Kolo Muani (former Frankfurt) are also recent additions to the squad. João Palhinha is also currently on loan at the club, and the suspended Micky van de Ven made a name for himself at Wolfsburg.

Dortmund's struggles in England

BVB have lost seven of their last eight away matches against English opposition. Their last away win in England was against Spurs.

Tottenham's strong European home record

Tottenham are unbeaten in their last five games against German opposition (W3, D2), including wins against both TSG Hoffenheim and Frankfurt last season on their way to winning the Europa League. Spurs also haven't lost a European home game in their last 23, winning 19 of those. They have won all three of their Champions League home games this season without conceding.

Head-to-head

Dortmund and Tottenham have met six times in European competitions to date. Dortmund won the first two encounters in the 2015/16 Europa League round of 16, but have lost each of the last four. The two most recent encounters came during the 2018/19 Champions League round of 16 when Spurs won 3-0 at home and then 1-0 in Dortmund. Bayern Munich's Harry Kane scored the only goal in that second leg.

Tottenham - the story so far

Despite struggling in the English Premier League, Tottenham's record in the Champions League is nearly identical to that of Dortmund's, with just the goals for and against differing. Consequently, Tottenham sit just one place behind their opponents. Their last UCL outing was a 3-0 win at home to Slavia Prague, and both of their remaining games are against German opposition, first Dortmund and then Eintracht Frankfurt.

Dortmund - the story so far

Despite a disappointing draw at home to Bodø/Glimt last time out, Dortmund are still well placed to qualify for the knockout play-offs at the very least and sit just one point off the round of 16 places. However, Tottenham and Inter Milan in their final two games represent tough challenges.
