Full time: Tottenham 2-0 Dortmund

A night to forget for BVB. They struggled to create any truly dangerous openings throughout, especially so after Svensson’s sending off in the first half. Automatic qualification for the round of 16 now looks unlikely on the back of this result, but a point at home to Inter on Matchday 8 should be enough to put them into the play-offs.

Schlotty goes close

Ryerson swings in the free-kick and finds Schlotterbeck, whose powerful header is tipped over by Vicario.
90'

One last chance

Ryerson is brought down on the right-hand corner of the Spurs penalty area. It's a great position for a free-kick but will BVB be able to capitalise?
88'

Almost

Quick feet from Chukwuemeka just outside the Tottenham box and he flicks the ball on for Silva to chase. The striker almost gets there but a Dortmund boot just beats him to it.

Shutting up shop

Tottenham are in energy conservation mode now, no longer trying to get forward with any great urgency. They're packing the defence and stopping Dortmund long before they get anywhere near the goal.
78'

Kobel to the rescue!

The former Frankfurt striker is sent through one-on-one, but his attempted low shot to the left of Kobel is read well by the goalkeeper, who makes a fine save.
76'

Anton says no

Kolo Muani sprints forward at full tilt and gets into the box. He twists and turns to try and get past Anton, but the BVB defender blocks him off.
73'

Kobel thwarts Xavi

The attacker wriggles his way past two defenders in the Dortmund box and lashes at shot towards the near post, but Kobel reacts smartly to paw it clear for a corner.
69'

Another (half) chance

Dortmund are finally getting forward with greater purpose and are spending more time in the Tottenham half. This time a cross comes in for Silva, but his header lacks the power to beat Vicario.
65'

Double change

More of an attacking switch from Kovač this time as Chukwuemeka and Silva are brought on to provide fresh impetus.

Jobe doing battle

But he's fighting a losing one this evening, it seems.
62'

Over from Anton

Dortmund finally have a sight of goal as the ball bobbles to Anton on the edge of the box, but he snatches at it and the ball goes high and wide of the target.
57'

Schlotterbeck down

The defender goes to ground after a collision with Solanke but it looks like hie'll be ok to continue.
54'

Over from Xavi

The Dutchman tries his luck from distance but can't keep his shot down and it sails well over the bar.
50'

Wide of the target

Ryerson takes the free-kick and although he gets it up and over the ball in expert fashion, it curls a good couple of yards wide of the post.
48'

Promising position

Nmecha is fouled just outside the Tottenham penalty area in a central position. Prime free-kick territory...
47'

Here we go again!

Two changes from Kovač at half-time and by bringing on two defensive-minded players for two attackers, it looks like he's going for stability and damage-limitation over a second-half comeback.

Half-time: Tottenham 2-0 Dortmund

It’s going to be extremely tough for BVB to get something from this one, 2-0 down at the break and with just ten men on the pitch following Svensson’s red card. Niko Kovač’s men had a couple of bright moments early on as Adeyemi threatened to cause trouble on the break, but Tottenham have looked very dangerous going forward, particularly down the right, and it’s hard to argue that they don’t deserve their lead.
Half-time

Odobert curls one

Another opening for Tottenham, with Dortmund looking very ragged at the back right now, but Odobert's shot is straight at Kobel.
39'

Xavi should seal it!

Another attack down the right, another chance for Spurs. This time the ball falls kindly for Xavi, around ten yards from goal, but his first-time, left-footed strike is wild and goes well over.
camera-photo

Game over?

The home side get their second of the game. Dortmund are caught out by another attacker down their left, leading to a low ball into the box finding Solanke, who bundles the ball over the line from close range.

Dominic Solanke
32'

All Tottenham

Dortmund are reeling from going down to ten men and can't get out of their own half.
28'

A whisker away

Xavi delivers a teasing, in-swinging cross from the left towards the back post. Porro is charging in but can't quite get there at full stretch.
camera-photo

Bad to worse

Following a VAR review, Svensson's initial yellow card is upgraded to a straight red for a dangerous high boot. The Swedish wide-man lost possession of the ball deep in the Tottenham half, and while stretching to regain possession he accidentally caught the leg of Odobert with a studs-up challenge.
26'

Red card

23'

Chaos in the Dortmund box

Spence skips past two BVB defenders on the Tottenham left, drives into the box and drills a low cross into the middle. The away side again struggle to cope with it, but eventually clear the danger.
21'

Glimpse for Dortmund

Spurs goalkeeper Vicario makes a hash of controlling a back pass, very nearly letting Guirassy in to nick it off his toe before smashing it clear for a Dortmund throw.
19'

Decisive from Bellingham

Spurs threaten again after getting forward down the right. The ball is cut back to Xavi, whose first-time shot is deflected out for a corner by Bellingham.
camera-photo

Tottenham lead!

BVB struggle to deal with a Tottenham corner that goals all the way through to Odobert at the back post. He gets a cross in at the second attempt, finding Romero on the edge of the six-yard box to sweep in the game's opening goal.

camera-photo

Adeyemi dangerous

The Dortmund forward has threatened a couple of times on the break already as he looks to exploit gaps with his explosive pace.
8'

Schlotterbeck this time!

Xavi takes out three Dortmund defenders with a slide-rule pass into the box for Porro. His low ball into the middle from the right would be a simple tap-in for Solanke, but Schlotterbeck gets in the way to poke the ball clear.
5'

Svensson to the rescue

Tottenham get forward well on the break down the right, culminating in a teasing cross into the middle looking for Xavi. Svensson reads the danger though and slides in just ahead of the former Leipzig attacker to clear for a corner.
2'

Tottenham pressing high

The hosts have set out their stall early on here as they harass BVB on the edge of Kobel's penalty area.

Peeeep!

Spurs get the ball rolling in London.

More on that Dortmund team

Niko Koavč has made three changes to his line-up after squeezing past St. Pauli at the weekend, bringing in Bensebaini in defence for Can, while Couto (pictured) starts at right wing-back for Ryerson. Guirassy is restored up top in place of Silva.

Watch: Kolo Muani's incredible 2022/23 season

Another former Bundesliga player to keep an eye on tonight is Spurs forward Randal Kolo Muani, who lit up Germany's top flight in 2022/23 with 15 goals in 32 league appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Free-scoring Dortmund

Although in the Bundesliga, Dortmund are perhaps best known at the moment for their superb defensive displays, the Champions League has been completely different. They are currently the joint top scorers in the competition with 19 goals and have scored exactly four goals on four separate occasions (Juventus (4-4), Athletic Club (4-1), Copenhagen (4-2) and Villarreal (4-0).

Latest Tottenham team news

Spurs are facing an injury crisis with only 11 first-team outfield players available, with ex-Leipzig playmaker Xavi likely to start despite being troubled by a swollen ankle, but former Bayern attacker Mathys Tel has not been named in the squad for the encounter.

Latest Dortmund team news

Marcel Sabitzer has been ruled out with his calf injury, but Aarón Anselmino and Ramy Bensebaini are expected to be included in the Dortmund squad after both training on Monday and travelling to London.

Kovač's happy return?

The Dortmund boss has fond memories of the dugout in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - having overseen a thumping 7-2 win as Bayern coach in the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League group stage. Serge Gnabry hit four goals in London that night and Bayern went on to lift the trophy, but only after Kovač left his role the following month.

Niko Kovač on facing Spurs

"We want to win tomorrow, but to do that we need to put on an exceptional showing. We know that Tottenham have won their first three home games without conceding a goal. That means tomorrow won't be a walk in the park. We'll have to work hard, really hard, and stay focused."
camera-photo

Thomas Frank on facing Dortmund

"[It's] a game tomorrow against a very good German side [...] We are ready, we are focused for the game tomorrow and the plans look good."

Early Dortmund team news

Mussa Kaba and Aarón Anselmino are expected to play no part in this encounter, while it may also come too soon for Marcel Sabitzer. After competing for Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, Ramy Bensebaini is back with the Dortmund squad, but illness kept him out of the Pauli game - he may have recovered in time for this fixture, though.

Tottenham's ex-Bundesliga group

The Tottenham squad is packed full of players who have played in the Bundesliga. Xavi Simons joined the club from RB Leipzig in the summer, whereas Mathys Tel (former Bayern) and Randal Kolo Muani (former Frankfurt) are also recent additions to the squad. João Palhinha is also currently on loan at the club, and the suspended Micky van de Ven made a name for himself at Wolfsburg.

Dortmund's struggles in England

BVB have lost seven of their last eight away matches against English opposition. Their last away win in England was against Spurs.
camera-photo

Tottenham's strong European home record

Tottenham are unbeaten in their last five games against German opposition (W3, D2), including wins against both TSG Hoffenheim and Frankfurt last season on their way to winning the Europa League. Spurs also haven't lost a European home game in their last 23, winning 19 of those. They have won all three of their Champions League home games this season without conceding.
camera-photo

Head-to-head

Dortmund and Tottenham have met six times in European competitions to date. Dortmund won the first two encounters in the 2015/16 Europa League round of 16, but have lost each of the last four. The two most recent encounters came during the 2018/19 Champions League round of 16 when Spurs won 3-0 at home and then 1-0 in Dortmund. Bayern Munich's Harry Kane scored the only goal in that second leg.

Tottenham - the story so far

Despite struggling in the English Premier League, Tottenham's record in the Champions League is nearly identical to that of Dortmund's, with just the goals for and against differing. Consequently, Tottenham sit just one place behind their opponents. Their last UCL outing was a 3-0 win at home to Slavia Prague, and both of their remaining games are against German opposition, first Dortmund and then Eintracht Frankfurt.
camera-photo

Dortmund - the story so far

Despite a disappointing draw at home to Bodø/Glimt last time out, Dortmund are still well placed to qualify for the knockout play-offs at the very least and sit just one point off the round of 16 places. However, Tottenham and Inter Milan in their final two games represent tough challenges.
