Karius: From zero to hero

For Loris Karius, life as a professional goalkeeper has certainly been something of a roller-coaster ride. After making his name with Mainz, Karius joined Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool and in 2018 reached the Champions League final – only to make a couple of serious mistakes in the 3-1 loss to Real Madrid. Across subsequent spells with Beşiktaş, Union Berlin and Newcastle United, his star seemed on the wane as he struggled for game-time – but that all changed when he joined Schalke at the start of 2025. A key contributor to their successful promotion drive last season, Karius is now fresh from putting in back-to-back Man of the Match shifts against Bayern Munich and his ex-club Union.
