Bayer Leverkusen's away-day master Xabi Alonso signs off on record unbeaten run
Xabi Alonso's final game as Bayer Leverkusen head coach ended in a 2-2 draw at Mainz, setting a new Bundesliga record for successive away games without loss.
Leverkusen didn't lose a single game on their way to winning the Bundesliga and DFB Cup in 2023/24 - an unprecedented achivement in German football.
Although dethroned on both fronts this season, Alonso's charges avoided defeat in all 17 of their away league fixtures to claim Bayern Munich's previous record of 33 Bundesliga matches on the road without loss (from Matchday 32 of 2011/12 to Matchday 27 of 2013/14) outright.
However, unlike the old Bayern best mark, which straddled the tenures of Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola, Leverkusen's ongoing run is the work of one head coach - another record. The previous best was 27 away matches, held by the great Udo Lattek until 28 February 2025, when Alonso's Bayer won 2-0 in Kiel.
Die Werkself's away report card under the Spanish tactician over the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns reads: W23, D11.

Leverkusen will have the chance to extend their record when the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign gets under way on the weekend beginning 22 August, albeit without Alonso at the helm.
The former midfield great recently confirmed that the Mainz game would be his last in charge of the Rhineland club.
