How was his 2025/26 season?

Stanišić had a couple of spells out through injury, but was otherwise a key player as Bayern won their 34th Bundesliga title. The 26-year-old was initially deployed on the left-hand side, before becoming head coach Vincent Kompany's preferred right-back. He contributed three goals and seven assists in all competitions, whilst ranking in the German top flight's 95th percentile for defensive duels won and 88th for passes attempted per 90 minutes.

What he brings to the national team

As well as playing in the full-back areas, Stanišić - AKA 'Mr Malleable' - can operate in the centre of defence. He makes the bread and butter defensive work look easy, but is also supremely confident with the ball at his feet in more advanced areas. The Munich-born former Germany U21 international's pinpoint passing game is not a quality to be sniffed at, either.

What his coaches say

"When Ivica Olić was last here for training, he said that it's important for Croatia to have such an intelligent and versatile player like Stani. He's also really fast, which some people don't see. He needed time, but now he's here. He's one of us. He's played his way into an important role this season." - Kompany

"Josip has become my absolute favorite player here in Croatia. His development at Bayern was surprisingly fast for us – from being the 12th or 13th man in the squad to a really important player. He benefits a lot from being able to play well in any defensive position. That's why Josip is a player every coach wants. His qualities are extremely important for a team." - Croatia assistant coach Ivica Olić, who played for Bayern from 2009-2012
