Wolfsburg name Daniel Bauer permanent head coach
Wolfsburg have named Daniel Bauer their full-time head coach on an 18-month contract after the interim boss’s impressive start to life at the Volkswagen Arena.
Bauer, 43, had been handed the reins at the start of November after the dismissal of Paul Simonis and earned seven points from his first four games. His new deal, running until summer 2027, was announced minutes prior to the Wolves’ final match of the year at home to Freiburg.
“Daniel took over the team at a difficult time and didn’t just stabilise things but developed them each week. He’s managed to form a strong unit and breathe new life into the team,” said Wolfsburg managing director Peter Christiansen.
New sporting director Pirmin Schwegler added, “The performances and results speak for themselves. We firmly believe Daniel is the right man to ensure the best possible success this season and beyond.”
Bauer has been working at Wolfsburg in the youth academy since 2016, while also having two games in temporary charge of the first team at the end of the 2024/25 season, earning a win and a draw.
“I’m very grateful for the trust from the club. The team worked very hard in the last few weeks and showed their potential. I’m looking forward to working on further development with my coaching staff and the players.”
A former central midfielder whose highest level was Bundesliga 2, Bauer will begin the course to gain his professional coaching licence with the DFB in January, alongside his work as head coach. Wolfsburg’s first game of the new year is away at Bayern Munich on 11 January.
