Stuttgart put in a dominant showing against their Swiss opponents in their sole winter friendly, despite a lengthy injury list. Nikolas Nartey opened the scoring in the 19th minute and set up Justin Diehl for their second three minutes later. Chris Führich added a fine third goal in the second half, before the concession of two late consolation goals.

First-half goals fired Union Berlin past third-tier Erzgebirge Aue in a 120-minute friendly. Aljoscha Kemlein scored inside nine minutes, with Oliver Burke doubling the capital club's advantage six minutes before half-time. Leopold Querfeld and Kemlein also struck the woodwork in a largely one-side affair, though Aue's Maximilian Schmid did pull a goal back in the 108th minute.

Friendly matches: St. Pauli 0-0 Werder Bremen (4 January)
Werder Bremen warmed up for their opening Bundesliga fixture of 2026 by holding St. Pauli to a 0-0 draw at the Millerntor. Werder were on the back foot for long periods, but showed real defensive resolve to keep the hosts at bay. Maximillian Wöber and Olivier Deman also made their long-awaited injury comebacks in the second half.

Cologne rode their luck on their way to recording a narrow win over Switzerland's Lugano. The Swiss side passed up a number of chances to level after Marius Bülter had given Cologne a first-half lead. Former Bundesliga forward Kevin Behrens did manage to equalise after the break, but the Billy Goats had the final say through Linton Maina's 80th-minute winner.

Loan signing Kōta Takai made his debut for Gladbach, but their winter friendly in Türkiye did not go according to plan as they were well beaten by their Bundesliga 2 opponents. The Foals were unfortunate not to get onto the scoresheet, though, after creating several good chances and hitting the crossbar in the second half when Gio Reyna teed up Wael Mohya.

New signing Tomoya Andō made his St. Pauli debut in a goalless draw with northern rivals Bremen. Japanese countryman Joel Fujita had the chance to secure a late win in a game dominated by the hosts and played out in front of over 25,000 fans, but substitute goalkeeper Karl Hein was equal to the task.
