Born in Geneva to parents from Angola and DR Congo, Manzambi first developed at the youth academy of Swiss Super League club Servette, but headed over the border to Freiburg in 2023 at the age of 17.

He made his debut for Freiburg's reserve team in the German third tier in February 2024 and hit two goals in 10 appearances in the remainder of the 2023/24 season. That gained the attention of new Freiburg coach Julian Schuster, who handed the midfielder his Bundesliga debut from the bench in a 3-0 win at Heidenheim in September 2024.

Two goals and an assist in a run of six successive appearances at the end of the 2024/25 season confirmed his promise, and more followed in 2025/26 - including a first European goal in a 3-1 UEFA Europa League away win at Nice in November 2025.

He received a first Swiss full international call-up at the age of 19 in June 2025 and scored on his second appearance in a 4-0 friendly win against the USA, before adding a second international goal in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory in Sweden in October.

Plays a bit like: Michael Ballack

Manzambi shares a similarity with the Germany legend in belonging to the rare breed of genuine all-round midfielders. Equally blessed with the defensive side of the game as he is with passing and dribbling, the Swiss talent also has the drive to make an impact on any game. He says of his own versatile talent: "Fundamentally, I'm a box-to-box midfielder, but I think I can play on the wing and as a playmaker."

Did you know?

While goalkeeping is not every young footballer's preferred position, Manzambi had to be talked out of donning the gloves by his father and brother in his early years in Geneva as they recognised he had so much talent as an outfield player.

What they're saying

"He has this incredible hunger to score goals that I have rarely seen. It's a real pleasure to watch him play." - Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin

"He has the quality to be an incredibly good player, and he has proved that already. He should keep on being as creative and lively as he is now. He knows how to beat opponents too - not everyone can do that." - Freiburg teammate Vincenzo Grifo

“Johan has consistently continued to develop, something that makes him really stand out. He has been able to hone his skills even further and his style of play has made him an essential part of the success of the team. Everyone is sure that here is the best place for him to be.” - Freiburg board member Jochen Saier on Manzambi extending his contract in June 2025
