Johan Manzambi: Who is Freiburg and Switzerland's young midfield marvel?
Having got tongues wagging following his strong performances in the Bundesliga for Freiburg, multi-talented midfielder Johan Manzambi has already made a huge impact at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Freiburg have developed quite the reputation for producing sharp footballing talents in recent years, with Manzambi the latest star to burst into the big time in the Black Forest.

Born in Geneva to parents from Angola and DR Congo, Manzambi first developed at the youth academy of Swiss Super League club Servette, but headed over the border to Freiburg in 2023 at the age of 17.
He made his debut for Freiburg's reserve team in the German third tier in February 2024 and hit two goals in 10 appearances in the remainder of the 2023/24 season. That alerted the attention of new Freiburg coach Julian Schuster, who handed the midfielder his Bundesliga debut from the bench in a 3-0 win at Heidenheim in September 2024.
Two goals and an assist in a run of six successive appearances at the end of the 2024/25 season confirmed his promise, but there was plenty more to come in 2025/26.
Manzambi went on to register seven goals and eight assists in all competitions, including a crucial strike in Freiburg's UEFA Europa League semi-final against Braga which helped Die Breisgauer reach a maiden European final.
He received a first full Swiss international call-up at the age of 19 in June 2025 and scored on his second appearance in a 4-0 friendly win against the USA. He is currently on 16 caps and six goals for the national team, three of which have come during a magnificent FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.

Like Germany legend Ballack, Manzambi belongs to the rare breed of genuine all-round midfielders. As strong in the tackle as he is going forward, the Swiss talent also has the drive to make an impact on any game. He says of his own versatile talent: "Fundamentally, I'm a box-to-box midfielder, but I think I can play on the wing and as a playmaker."

While goalkeeping is not every young footballer's preferred position, Manzambi had to be talked out of donning the gloves by his father and brother in his early years in Geneva, as they recognised he had so much talent as an outfield player.
