Johan Manzambi and Luis Díaz to face off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16
Tuesday night's FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 clash between Switzerland and Colombia will see two of the Bundesliga's shining lights lock horns, with Johan Manzambi and Luis Díaz both desperate to guide their countries into the quarter-final stage.
Freiburg's midfield diamond and Bayern Munich’s tricky winger both enjoyed stellar 2025/26 campaigns ahead of this summer's tournament, and will both aim to fire their respective countries into a World Cup quarter-final when they go head-to-head in Vancouver.
Double-winner Díaz registered an astonishing 15 goals and 14 assists in the league, to go with a further 10 goals and six assists across the UEFA Champions League and DFB Cup. The Colombian took to the Bundesliga like a duck to water, terrorising defences on weekly basis as the Rekordmeister picked up a second consecutive league title - netting a record 122 goals - and a 21st DFB Cup.

He hasn’t let a gruelling campaign at club level affect him either, playing the entirety of Colombia’s four games so far. He’s registered a goal and assist in that time as Los Cafeteros went unbeaten through the group stage and of course the round of 32, conceding just one goal across those games. Offside flags and hitting the woodwork have also prevented him from building on those tallies.
His Swiss counterpart, Manzambi, enjoyed a breakout season for Freiburg, playing a key role in the Breisgau club’s run to the Europa League final and a seventh-place finish in the Bundesliga, which means they’ll compete in Europe once more next season in the Conference League.
Manzambi made 26 starts for Julian Schuster’s side last term, building on the four he made in 2024/25. He notched five goals and four assists from midfield in that time, catching the eye with his ability to play a variety of roles within the middle of the park, all with an air of composure, confidence and undeniable quality.

He’s now taken his talents beyond the Bundesliga and onto the global stage, scoring three goals and registering two assists in Switzerland’s four games up until now, including a late brace against Bosnia and Herzegovina that guided his team to an important win in their second group game.
Díaz got the better of Manzambi at club level, with Bayern winning both of their games against Freiburg on their way to the title, but Tuesday night’s meeting between their two nations promises to be a much closer affair, with both Bundesliga players capable of making their mark and deciding the contest.
