Werder Bremen's Mitchell Weiser suffers cruciate ligament tear
Werder Bremen wing-back Mitchell Weiser will be out of action for several months after suffering a cruciate ligament tear during pre-season training on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old sustained the injury to his right knee on Wednesday afternoon, and the diagnosis was confirmed by the team's medical chief, Dr. Philip Heitman, following an MRI scan.
Treatment and therapy options will be finalised in the coming days for Weiser, but it is expected that he will be out of action for several months at the very least.
"The news hurt all of us deeply," said new Werder head coach Horst Steffen. "It’s a big blow, both in sporting terms and on a personal level. I feel terribly sorry for Mitch. As a team and as a club, we’ll now do everything we can to help him recover as quickly as possible and return to the squad."
Watch: The best of Mitchell Weiser

Weiser was one Bremen's standout performers last season, contributing five goals and eight assists as the team finished in eighth place, having been in contention for European qualification for much of the campaign.
His absence will be felt all the more keenly following injuries to fellow key players Jens Stage (foot) and Marvin Ducksch (calf) during the team's pre-season preparations.
