Union came into this Matchday 28 encounter looking to bounce back from a heavy 4-0 defeat at Bayern Munich just before the international break, while St. Pauli arrived desperate for points in their battle against relegation.
The hosts made five changes to their starting lineup after that disappointing performance in Munich, with Diogo Leite, Wooyeong Jeong, András Schäfer, Oliver Burke and Andrej Ilić all returning to the starting eleven.
The visitors, fielding their oldest-ever Bundesliga lineup with an average age of 29.1 years, were forced into three changes due to injuries, with Adam Dźwigała, Karol Mets, and Martijn Kaars coming into the side.
Pereira Lage's wonder-strike gives Pauli first-half lead
Union started brightly at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, dominating possession and creating the first clear chance when Danilho Doekhi forced a good save from Nikola Vasilj in the fifth minute.
Despite their control, the hosts struggled to convert pressure into clear opportunities, and it was St. Pauli who struck first in spectacular fashion. In the 25th minute, after a partially cleared free-kick, Mathias Pereira Lage connected perfectly on the volley to send a thunderous strike beyond Frederik Rønnow from the edge of the area.
Union pushed for an equaliser before the break, with Vasilj making an excellent double save to deny Burke and Derrick Köhn in the 40th minute, ensuring the visitors maintained their advantage at half-time.
Ilić levels as Union push for winner
Union continued their offensive approach after the interval and found their reward in the 52nd minute. From a corner delivered by Köhn, Ilić rose highest in the St. Pauli box to head home the equaliser from close range.
The goal energised the home side, who began to dominate proceedings. Schäfer missed a golden opportunity in the 67th minute after a rare mistake from Vasilj, but the St. Pauli goalkeeper quickly redeemed himself with a double save to deny both Schäfer and Burke.
As the match entered its final stages, Union ramped up the pressure with a series of attacks and set-pieces, forcing the visitors into desperate defending.
Tom Rothe and Rani Khedira both had good chances for the hosts in the closing minutes, while St. Pauli's hopes of snatching a winner were dealt a blow when captain Jackson Irvine received a second yellow card in the 93rd minute for a foul on Schäfer.
Despite the numerical advantage in the dying moments, Union couldn't find a winner against the resilient ten men.
Man of the Match: Andrej Ilić
Ilić proved to be the key figure for Union, scoring the crucial equaliser and causing problems for the St. Pauli defence throughout the match. The Serbian striker not only provided the goal but also won an impressive 19 challenges - more than any other player on the pitch. His aerial presence was particularly valuable, with his well-timed header from Köhn's corner giving the goalkeeper no chance.
Beyond his goal, Ilić was constantly involved in Union's attacking play, registering multiple attempts and proving difficult to contain for the St. Pauli defenders. His all-round display earned him the Man of the Match award with 34% of the votes, capping a strong individual performance despite his team's inability to find a winner.
