Andrej Ilić double fires Union Berlin to comfortable Augsburg win
Andrej Ilić scored twice and András Schäfer added a stunning long-range strike as Union Berlin ended their Bundesliga season with a commanding 4-0 home victory against Augsburg.

Union headed into the final home game of the term under interim head coach Marie-Louise Eta, looking to build on their 3-1 victory at Mainz the previous week — their first win under Eta. Augsburg, meanwhile, still harboured slim hopes of finishing seventh and qualifying for the UEFA Conference League.
For Union, the occasion also carried emotional weight, with defenders Diogo Leite and Danilho Doekhi playing their final home game for the club. The match also marked the final Bundesliga appearance for referee Patrick Ittrich, who was officiating his 94th and last top-flight game.
Augsburg made the brighter start, enjoying early possession and winning the first corner of the afternoon, but they failed to create any real danger. Union were content to sit deep and hit on the counter, and it was exactly that approach which brought the opening goal. Klaus launched the ball forward, and a mix-up between goalkeeper Finn Dahmen and Robin Fellhauer left Ilić with a simple finish into an empty net, assisted by András Schäfer.
It was Ilić's 50th competitive appearance for the club and his first goal of the season with his foot, having previously scored only with his head in 2025/26. Livan Burcu was a constant threat down the right flank, and Union looked dangerous on the break throughout the first half.
Augsburg struggled to find a way through a well-organised Union defence, with stand-in goalkeeper Carl Klaus barely tested and, shortly before the break, the hosts doubled their advantage. Burke played a ball into the run of Ilić, who took one touch and fired a low shot from around 25 yards that bounced over Dahmen to put Union in control.
Union came out with the same intensity after the break. Burke was denied by Dahmen early in the second half after arriving at the back post, and Trimmel also had a long-range effort saved. The third goal eventually came in within 10 minutes of the restart, and it was a moment of real quality. Union played a short corner, the ball was worked to Schäfer on the edge of the area, and the Hungarian midfielder unleashed a powerful right-footed drive that flew into the top corner.
Augsburg substitute Uchenna Ogundu struck the left post in the 79th minute — the closest the visitors came to scoring all afternoon, but it was Union who had the final say in the 89th minute. Dmytro Bogdanov saw a shot blocked, only for Jeong to tap home from close range on the rebound to complete the victory.
Man of the Match: Andrej Ilić
Ilić was the undisputed star of the afternoon, earning the Man of the Match award with 73 per cent of the vote. The Serbian striker scored twice — his first goal of the season with his foot — and was a constant menace for the Augsburg defence. His opener, a composed finish into an empty net after a defensive mix-up, and his second, a well-struck shot from distance that bounced past Dahmen, were both decisive moments. Ilić finished the match with three shots on target and an xG of 0.93 across his two goals.
