Full time: Freiburg 3-2 Hoffenheim

Freiburg claim all three points after a blink-and-you miss it second half. The first 45 minutes were rather more cagey, with Lucas Höler putting the hosts in front from Vincenzo Grifo’s cross. Grifo doubled his side’s lead early in the second period, only for Wout Weghorst to reduce the deficit moments later. Maximilian Beier later equalised as momentum appeared to be swinging Hoffenheim’s way, especially when Manuel Gulde was sent off, but Roland Sallai had the final say with a close-range finish in the closing stages.

Another twist!

Just when it looked like Freiburg were set to dig in for the remainder of the game and try to weather Hoffenheim's pressure, they've grabbed a third goal! Sallai gets his head to a cross from the left and although Baumann makes the save, the Freiburg midfielder pounces on the rebound to put Freiburg 3-2 up!

Hoffenheim back in it!

The perfect response from the visitors! A long ball forward is flicked on by Weghorst for Beier, who cushions it back into the Dutchman's path. He scuffs his shot from the edge of the box but it's well-placed enough to roll into the corner. Game on!

Grifo doubles the lead!

Hoffenheim try to play out from the back and Gregoritsch picks Grillitsch's pocket. He plays it to Sallai, who instantly slots it through to Grifo. He's forced wide and it looks like the chance has gone, but he twists and turns and creates some to curl a low shot past Baumann and in at the far post.

Half-time: Freiburg 1-0 Hoffenheim

It's been a fairly even game so far and although Hoffenheim had the first couple of chances of the game thanks to the industrious Kadeřábek down the right, they were unable to finish them off. Freiburg grew into the game and go into the break with a narrow lead thanks to Höler's close-range volley.

Off the line - twice!

Weghorst does really well on the right as he shrugs off the challenge of his marker to pull the ball back from the byline for Beier, whose shot from 12 yards looks destined to go in - until it's hooked off the line by a defender. The rebound comes to Bülter, whose forceful low shot is saved by Atubolu.

Höler opens the scoring!

Freiburg have the lead and it's a lovely goal as Grifo curls a delightful cross from the left over the Hoffenheim defence for Höler to volley home!

Kadeřábek dangerous again

It's another foray down the right from the Hoffenheim wing-back and this time he floats a lofted cross towards the back post. It's a teasing one but Ginter reads the situation and manages to head clear.

Best chance of the game!

Kadeřábek scurries down the right for Hoffenheim, lifts his head and cuts a low ball back into the box for the arriving Kramarić. The Croatia forward strikes it first time from 10 yards out, but his low shot is straight at Atubolu.

Streich's view on Hoffenheim

"They did well in Munich [against Bayern on Matchday 17] and missed some chances. They're incredibly good in transition and have some very quick players."
camera-photo

Matarazzo's view on Freiburg

"Freiburg have built success over several years. They play 'complete' football. Lots of variation, with lots of mobility in their build-up play. They are also not conceding many goals. That makes them difficult to work out."

Eggestein's barren run

No other player has had as many shots without scoring in the German top-flight this season than Maximilian Eggestein (22). He last scored in the Bundesliga on 12 March 2023 in a 2-1 home win over Hoffenheim.
