Mainz secure Bundesliga survival after impressive away win against St. Pauli
Mainz confirmed their Bundesliga status for an 18th consecutive season with a 2-1 victory at St. Pauli on Matchday 32. Phillip Tietz and Phillipp Mwene scored in the first half, with Abdoulie Ceesay's late consolation coming too little, too late for the struggling hosts.

St. Pauli came into this fixture on the Bundesliga's longest winless run, having collected just three points from their previous seven matches. With the non-relegation places five points away and rivals closing in, Alexander Blessin's side desperately needed a result at the Millerntor.
Mainz, meanwhile, needed only a draw to secure Bundesliga football for an 18th consecutive season.
St. Pauli made a bright start, winning two early corners and forcing a blocked shot from Hauke Wahl and a cleared header from Tomoya Andō. However, Mainz responded with ruthless efficiency. In the sixth minute, Sheraldo Becker capitalised on a mistake from Wahl and squared the ball to Tietz inside the penalty area, who hammered it past Nikola Vasilj to give the visitors the lead.
Jackson Irvine went close for the hosts at 13 minutes, his toe-poked effort from a free kick going narrowly wide, before Nadiem Amiri threatened on the counter, almost wriggling his way past the entire Pauli backline before Wahl deflected his shot away for a corner.
Mainz continued to press their advantage as the half wore on, with Amiri having multiple shots blocked inside the St. Pauli box around the half-hour mark. A brief stoppage at 33 minutes saw Ritzka and Tietz clash heads, with the Mainz striker requiring tape on his eyebrow before play resumed.
The visitors then doubled their lead in the 40th minute: a long ball from Daniel Batz found Tietz, who held up play brilliantly before laying off to Silvan Widmer on the right. Widmer drove to the byline and cut the ball back for the unmarked Mwene, who finished emphatically from close range.
The second half began with Mainz looking to put the game beyond doubt. Amiri was denied by Vasilj from a tight angle in the 48th minute after a clever through ball from Tietz, and Becker's header from an Amiri cross was brilliantly saved by the St. Pauli goalkeeper at 52 minutes.
The visitors then struck the woodwork at 65 minutes when Tietz headed Widmer's cross onto the crossbar, with Mwene's follow-up blocked on the line. St. Pauli responded with a double substitution, introducing Ceesay and Martijn Kaars, whose pace immediately caused Mainz more problems.
St. Pauli's attacking play was transformed and big chance fell to Kaars at 74 minutes after Ceesay's clever run put him through on goal, but Mwene blocked the Dutchman's shot.
Three minutes later, the two substitute strikers combined to give St. Pauli hope: Kaars played a clever through ball between Danny da Costa and Stefan Posch, and Ceesay squeezed the ball past Batz to make it 1-2. Joel Chima Fujita's long-range effort in stoppage time was well saved by Batz, and Mainz held on for a deserved victory that confirmed their Bundesliga survival.
Man of the Match: Phillip Tietz
Tietz was the standout performer on the day, earning 57 per cent of the player of the match votes. The Mainz striker opened the scoring in the sixth minute, capitalising on a defensive error to slot home past Vasilj. He was also instrumental in the build-up to Mwene's second goal, holding up the ball under pressure before releasing Widmer on the right flank. Tietz was a constant physical presence throughout, and even struck the crossbar in the second half before being replaced after 84 minutes.
