Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland among 2021 Ballon d’Or nominees

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland have been named among the 30 nominees for the 2021 Ballon d’Or.

The reigning Best FIFA Men’s Player, Lewandowski, is among the frontrunners for France Football’s award as the best player in the world.

The Bayern man is the reigning Best FIFA Men’s Player and recently picked up the European Golden Shoe as Europe’s top scorer in the 2020/21 season after he scored 41 goals to break Gerd Müller’s 49-year record for most goals in a Bundesliga campaign.

Lewandowski was the top scorer in the 2019/20 Bundesliga (34 goals), the UEFA Champions League (15) and DFB Cup (six). He followed that up with winner’s medals in the DFL Supercup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup for an unprecedented 2020. His haul of 48 goals last season came in only 40 competitive appearances as he positions himself to become the first Polish player to be named the best in the world.

Haaland’s goalscoring exploits have been no less spectacular either. He got 41 goals in as many appearances over 2020/21 – including 27 from 28 in the league as the Dortmund man was named Bundesliga Player of the Season – and has 24 in just 25 across this calendar year.

This is the first time the Norwegian has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or and he would also be the first from his country to win it. The only other BVB player to have earned the award was Matthias Sammer in 1996.

Both players currently lead the Bundesliga scoring chart this season on seven goals apiece.

Lewandowski would be the fourth Bayern player to pick up the Ballon d’Or after the late Müller, Franz Beckenbauer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Other Bundesliga players to have won it are Allan Simonsen (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Kevin Keegan (Hamburg).
