RB Leipzig defender Marcelo Saracchi faces a long spell on the sidelines after tearing his cruciate knee ligaments in a pre-season friendly against Montpellier.

Saracchi, who has returned to Leipzig this summer after spending the past 18 months on loan at Galatasaray in Turkey, had been hoping to force his way into contention for a regular berth in Jesse Marsch's team this season.

He is now not likely to have that opportunity until the second half of the season after Leipzig confirmed he had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Saracchi came on as a half-time substitute to make his second appearance this pre-season and picked up the injury at the end of the 90 minutes of a game Leipzig lost 2-1 after leading 1-0.

The 23-year-old Uruguayan full-back joined Leipzig from River Plate in 2018, but made just 13 Bundesliga appearances before moving to Galatasaray, where he was a regular over the past season and a half.
