Austria international Michael Gregoritsch has rejoined Augsburg on loan from Danish side Brondby until the end of the season, adding some much-needed firepower as the Bavarians battle to secure their Bundesliga status.

Augsburg, who hold an option to make the move permanent, will be hoping Gregoritsch can replicate the form he displayed in his previous stint in Bavaria (2017-2022), during which he played in 129 competitive matches, registering 31 goals and eight assists.

“Michael has shown his qualities not only at FCA but also at other Bundesliga clubs,” said sporting director Benni Weber. “With him, we gain an experienced, strong aerial striker who can help the team both on and off the pitch, which will be important for us, especially in decisive phases of games.”

Sandwiched in between his initial departure from Augsburg and his brief stay in Denmark was a successful three-year stint with Freiburg, the highlight of which was undoubtedly his remarkable eight-goal tally across 15 UEFA Europa League games. The robust striker has extensive experience in German football, in fact, having previously starred for Hamburg, Bochum and St. Pauli, among others.

An experienced international (72 caps, 23 goals), the 31-year-old was also recently instrumental in propelling Austria back to their first FIFA World Cup since 1998, scoring a late and vital equaliser against Bosnia and Herzegovina in November.

Gregoritsch, who will don the No. 38 jersey at the Augsburg Arena, said: “When the opportunity to join FCA came up, I was immediately fired up. I never lost contact with Augsburg, and I really wanted to take on this challenge.”
