Matthias Ginter extends contract with Freiburg

Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter has extended his contract with the Black Forest outfit.

The length of Ginter’s new deal has not been disclosed, but both parties expressed their delight at extending their cooperation, as they look to build on a successful 2025/26 which culminated in a runners-up medal in the UEFA Europa League final.

“Freiburg has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, when I used to stand in the children’s section at the Dreisamstadion,” said Ginter, who returned to the Breisgau club from Borussia Dortmund in July 2022.

“The way the club has developed since then has been incredible. We want to keep building on what we’ve achieved together and continue pushing ourselves.”

Jochen Saier, Freiburg’s chief sporting officer, added: “Matze is a key figure in our team. The quality and consistency of his performances have been hugely impressive, and he’s played an important role in the team’s development. Even after so many years in professional football, Matze is still as driven and ambitious as ever. We’re delighted that he’ll be staying with us.”

Making his Bundesliga debut as an 18-year-old in January 2012 under Christian Streich, Freiburg’s steely defender has racked up 255 competitive appearances across two spells in all competitions for the Breisgau club, establishing himself as a leading defender in Germany's top flight after spells at Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach between 2014 and 2017.

The 32-year-old’s next appearance will likely come in the Bundesliga when Freiburg host newly promoted Schalke on 11 October, before welcoming Czech outfit Jablonec to the Europa-Park Stadion in the UEFA Conference League on 15 October.
