Malik Tillman shows guile and grit to keep American dream alive

To describe Malik Tillman as the unsung hero of the USA’s FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage campaign would be doing the Bayer Leverkusen star a disservice.

The 24-year-old was one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most reliable performers in victories over Paraguay and Australia, quietly pulling the strings for his side in the final third while the likes of Folarin Balogun, Christian Pulisic and Alex Freeman delivered headline-grabbing displays.

After being rested by Pochettino against Türkiye, Tillman was back in the starting line-up for his team’s round of 32 clash with Bosnia and Herzegovina - and this time, it was his turn to take centre stage.

All hail Tillman 🇺🇸

The Nuremberg native was at the heart of the move that led to the co-hosts’ opener on the stroke of half-time, threading a pass through to Balogun to steer beyond goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj and get the party started for the red-and-white-clad fans in Seattle.

Tillman’s through-ball took two deflections off Bosnia defenders before landing at the feet of the Monaco forward, but if there was an element of fortune about the USA’s first goal, there was nothing lucky about their second eight minutes from time.

After Stjepan Radeljić had fouled Sergiño Dest on the edge of the penalty area, Tillman deftly lifted the ball up and over the Bosnia wall and into the net to earn Pochettino’s side - who had been reduced to 10 men following Balogun’s 64th-minute dismissal - their first World Cup knockout victory since 2002.

The goal capped a magnificent all-round display from the USA No.17, who dictated the tempo throughout and deservedly got his hands on FIFA’s Player of the Match award for the first time at the tournament.

He also became only the second USA player on record to score a direct free-kick at a World Cup, after former Saarbrücken and Bochum forward Eric Wynalda in 1994.

Reflecting on his eye-catching set piece in an interview with FOX Sports, Tillman said: “Of course I practise it in training. You never know when it’s going to happen, but luckily today it happened. I was ready for it. I felt confident.

“[This win] shows our character. We’re always there for each other, no matter what. Today showed that.”

The manner of victory was not the only evidence of the USA’s steely determination to reach the latter stages of this summer’s showpiece. By the time Tillman had found the net with his late free-kick, he had sustained a nasty cut to his right foot in an earlier challenge with a Bosnia defender.

Tillman was sporting a bloody sock as he conducted his post-match media duties - but he was quick to allay fears that the gash might rule him out of his team’s last 16 meeting with Belgium in Seattle.

“I was in pain,” he admitted. “My shoe was cut, so I changed it. Someone stepped on it. It’s just pain, I guess. I’m feeling a lot better now.”

Tillman’s words will come as a major relief to Pochettino, who will have to make do without the suspended Balogun as he looks to become the first USA coach since the 1930 World Cup to get the better of Belgium.

The Stars and Stripes have lost all six meetings with the Red Devils since a 3-0 victory in the group stage of that inaugural tournament in Uruguay, including a 5-2 friendly defeat a little over three months ago.

But in-form Tillman and Co. have USA fans dreaming again - and they are not ready to wake up just yet.
