Data correct as of 27 January 2025

Mads Roerslev

Age: 25 (born 24 June 1999)
Club:
Wolfsburg (on loan from Brentford)
Position:
Right-back
Country:
Denmark (one cap)

Key stats

Roerslev joins Wolfsburg boasting lengthy experience of a major European league, with 93 English Premier League appearances to his name for Brentford. The Dane has enjoyed several spells as first-choice right-back for the London-based club, having joined in 2019 prior to their promotion to the top flight

He was signed by Brentford after five appearances for Copenhagen, where he was regarded as a major talent at the club's academy, making seven UEFA Youth League appearances back in 2016/17.

Roerslev was a regular in the Denmark international youth set-up, appearing in every age group from U17 to U21 level. He received his first full international cap in November 2024, in a 0-0 draw with Serbia, and will hope for more, with current Denmark coach Brian Riemer having past experience of coaching Roerslev both in the Copenhagen youth ranks and as an assistant coach at Brentford.

Plays a bit like: Joakim Mæhle

The fact that Roerslev and Mæhle share the same position, nationality and club means they certainly have a lot in common, and there is not a huge difference in their playing style, which is accomplished at both ends of the pitch on a good day - just as a modern full-back should be. Roerslev tends to make more direct attacking contributions than Mæhle in the form of dangerous long passes, while he offers a defensive toughness resembling Rasmus Kristensen of Eintracht Frankfurt when in his most solid form.

Did you know?

Roerslev's maturity may have counted against him as a young player, when he was sent on loan from Copenhagen to get playing time at Swedish club Halmstads. The Swedish side thought they were signing him as a 27-year-old, when was in fact 17 at the time. With registration paperwork carrying the club's wrongly assumed date of birth, he was not allowed to play for two months.

What they're saying

"With Mads, we've acquired a versatile defensive player who has a lot of experience for his age and is also nowhere near the end of his development. We are delighted that we were able to convince Mads to join VfL." - Wolfsburg sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz

“He is very good offensively – he is a good crosser of the ball, very good one-on-one, quick and energetic to get up and down the pitch. And he is also good defending one-on-one." - Brentford head coach Thomas Frank
