In a crucial relegation battle at the Volkswagen Arena, Wolfsburg took on Werder Bremen with both sides desperate for points.

The hosts came into the match without a win in nine Bundesliga games, while Bremen had suffered a setback - after two consecutive victories - with a 2-0 home defeat to Mainz

With only one point separating Wolfsburg in 17th from the relegation playoff position, and Bremen just four points clear of danger, the match represented a true six-pointer in the battle for Bundesliga survival.

Backhaus brilliance keeps scores level

The first half was a tense affair with both sides aware of the stakes. Bremen had the first notable opportunity when Romano Schmid fired wide from inside the box after good work from Olivier Deman. The visitors threatened again after 12 minutes when Cameron Puertas forced a fine save from Kamil Grabara with a well-struck free-kick, before Yukinari Sugawara saw his follow-up effort also denied.

Wolfsburg responded through Jonas Wind, whose close-range header from Christian Eriksen's corner was brilliantly saved by Mio Backhaus.

As half-time approached, the hosts nearly took the lead when Jesper Lindström's powerful strike was superbly tipped onto the crossbar by Backhaus, leaving the scores level at the break despite Wolfsburg creating the better chances.

Njinmah strikes with clinical finish

Wolfsburg began the second period on the front foot, with Joakim Mæhle testing Backhaus before Mohamed Amoura squandered a good opportunity, shooting wide from a tight angle on the hour mark.

Against the run of play, the visitors struck in the 68th minute when Felix Agu reached the byline and pulled the ball back for Njinmah, who fired a low shot into the bottom corner via a slight deflection. It was Bremen's first attempt of the second half and the forward's first goal since Matchday 18.

Dieter Hecking responded with a series of substitutions but Wolfsburg's task was made harder in stoppage time when Moritz Jenz received a second yellow card, allowing Bremen to see out the remaining minutes to secure three precious points.

Man of the Match: Justin Njinmah

Njinmah proved to be the match-winner with his clinical finish in the 68th minute, showcasing his predatory instincts to convert Bremen's first shot of the second half. The forward not only scored the decisive goal but also recorded the fastest sprint of any player in the match at 33.6 km/h, demonstrating the explosive pace that caused problems for the Wolfsburg defence.

Despite limited service - he touched the ball just seven times in the first half, fewer than any other player - Njinmah made his mark when it mattered most, earning him well-deserved Man of the Match honours and helping Bremen take a significant step towards Bundesliga safety.
