Mainz claim a crucial three points in their relegation battle against Werder Bremen
Mainz climbed up to 13th in the table with a huge 2-0 over Werder Bremen on Matchday 26. That result puts them six points clear of the direct relegation places and deepens Bremen's survival worries.
Werder Bremen 0–2 Mainz
Goals: 0-1 Nebel 6' (assist: Mwene), 0-2 Lee 52' (assist: Becker)
With just nine matches remaining in the Bundesliga season, this clash between Bremen and Mainz carried significant weight in the relegation battle. The hosts had built momentum with back-to-back victories for the first time this season, climbing to 13th place and a point above their visitors.
Mainz, meanwhile, had stabilised impressively under Urs Fischer, losing just two of 12 league matches since his appointment. Bremen coach Daniel Thioune handed rare starts to Leonardo Bittencourt and Julián Malatini, while Fischer kept faith with the same 11 that drew against Stuttgart despite Thursday's Conference League exertions in Olomouc.
Nebel heads Mainz into early lead
Any pre-match plans from Thioune were swiftly undone as Mainz struck with their first meaningful attack in the sixth minute. Phillipp Mwene burst down the left flank and delivered a pinpoint cross to Paul Nebel, who produced a spectacular diving header that flew past Backhaus into the net.
Bremen responded immediately and nearly equalised when Leonardo Bittencourt's powerful header from a Cameron Puertas corner struck the crossbar in the eighth minute. Despite dominating possession, the hosts struggled to break down Mainz's compact defence.
Puertas looked the most likely to create something for Bremen, while Bittencourt, making just his second league start of the season, was also influential early on.
Lee doubles advantage as Mainz show clinical edge
Thioune introduced Justin Njinmah for Keke Topp at half-time, and Bremen almost levelled three minutes after the restart when Marco Grüll curled an effort narrowly wide after good work from Jens Stage.
That miss proved costly as Mainz struck again in the 52nd minute. Bremen lost possession in midfield, allowing Sheraldo Becker to break down the right and cross for Jae-sung Lee, who slid in to finish from close range.
An injury to Julián Malatini forced another Bremen change, with Mick Schmetgens making his Bundesliga debut. The hosts continued to push forward, with Njinmah looking lively, but found themselves repeatedly thwarted by resolute Mainz defending and goalkeeper Daniel Batz.
Man of the Match: Paul Nebel
The 21-year-old midfielder was a constant threat throughout the match, but it was his perfectly timed diving header in the sixth minute that set the tone for Mainz's victory. Apart from his goal, Nebel covered an impressive 12.9 kilometres - more than any other player on the pitch - and was central to Mainz's tactical approach, helping to launch counter-attacks while maintaining defensive discipline.
His work rate was exemplified by being involved in 25 pressure situations, second only to Bremen's Romano Schmid. Nebel's all-action display earned him the official Man of the Match award with 52 percent of the votes, and a fantasy score of 277 points - the highest of any player in the game.
