There have been suggestions in the media that Kimmich might be heading for pastures new when his current contract expires in June, but the 30-year-old midfielder has given his strongest hint yet that that is not the case.

"There'll definitely be a decision in the coming days," he told media after helping Bayern to a 5-0 aggregate win over Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League round of 16. "And it's in the direction [staying at Bayern] I mentioned."

"It's been tough with the number of games of late, but now we need to make sure we get this thing over the line," added Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl, sounding a further note of encouragement.

The Leverkusen second leg was Kimmich's 429th competitive appearance for Bayern, whom he joined from RB Leipzig ahead of the 2015/16 season. The former VfB Stuttgart youth player has gone on to win eight Bundesliga titles with the record champions, as well as three DFB Cups and the 2019/20 Champions League.

One of the most complete central midfielders of his generation, not to mention a highly accomplished right-back, Kimmich has also won 97 Germany caps since making his international debut in May 2016. Following UEFA Euro 2024, he succeeded club-mate Manuel Neuer as his country's captain.

If all goes to plan, a deal could be struck before Bayern's trip to Union Berlin on Saturday. After that, Kimmich is expected to be in UEFA Nations League action for Germany, before the current Bundesliga leaders resume their pursuit of a record-extending 33rd Bundesliga title at home to St. Pauli on 29 March.
