Josh Sargent: "I looked up to Christian Pulisic"
Werder Bremen striker Josh Sargent has revealed that seeing Christian Pulisic make strides in Germany prompted him to try and forge his own professional career in the Bundesliga.
"It's weird because he's not that much older than me," Sargent explained to ESPN. "But I still looked up to him."
Pulisic burst onto the scene with Borussia Dortmund in the 2015/16 season and has broken a host of records in the three seasons since, including becoming the league's youngest non-German scorer and BVB's youngest player and scorer in the UEFA Champions league.

"I think the biggest thing that convinced me to come over here is that I already saw guys like Christian and Weston [McKennie] come over here and, I thought to myself: 'If they can do it, then why can't I try to do it?'
"I remember staying at residency down in Florida with the U17 national team, we lived together and watched games and stuff. We would see Christian on the TV and everybody wanted to be in that position as well."
A little less than 18 months younger than Pulisic, Sargent's opportunity arrived in September 2017, when Bremen committed to sign him to a professional contract on his 18th birthday the following February.

He has grabbed his opportunity with both hands since, scoring on his debut to cap off a 3-1 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf on Matchday 14 this season. Pulisic will swap the Signal Iduna Park for English Premier League side Chelsea in the summer, but Sargent remains convinced the Bundesliga is the right place to be.
"I think it's very good for US soccer if all of these young guys are coming over here and it's a great opportunity for young guys to play," he said. "If there's a good core of us that can have a good chemistry going forward for years to come, hopefully it just gets better and better and we can help everyone around us."
