Key stats

At just 22, Bolin is the latest Scandinavian prospect to earn a move to the Bundesliga. After joining Gladbach on loan in February, Die Fohlen have now signed him permanently from Swedish giants Malmö, handing him a contract through to 2030.

Born in Borås, the left-sided midfielder developed through the ranks at Malmö before emerging as a first-team regular in Sweden, enjoying a breakout Allsvenskan campaign in 2024, where he contributed 10 goals and three assists in 25 league appearances, helping Malmö to clinch the domestic title

Gladbach were quick to snap him up, signing Bolin in February 2026 on an initial loan with a purchase option included. Since then, he has quickly been integrated into Eugen Polanski's side.

In just his fourth league appearance against Union Berlin, the Swede earned his first contribution after winning a penalty in added-time that Kevin Diks converted. His late cameo clearly impressed the Gladbach coaching staff, as since then, the midfielder has been a regular starter under Polanski.

“I feel very much at home here,” said Bolin after the announcement of his Gladbach transfer. “I love the energy this big club gives off, and I love the Bundesliga with its big, full stadiums. I’ve been able to experience two home wins at Borussia-Park recently and celebrate with the team and the fans – that makes you want more, and I’m looking forward to continuing my development here at Borussia.”

Heading into the final few months of the domestic season, Bolin has an added incentive to impress with his new side. As a Sweden international with two caps to his name, the youngster still has a chance to play at this summer's FIFA World Cup - if his country can get through March's play-off rounds, that is.

Bolin has a got a long, long way to go to match the Bayern Munich legend, but the common traits with Germany's self-styled Raumdeuter are there.

"I like to be proactive in the attack and see a lot of the ball. I run a lot, press intensely and try to create space, for myself of course, but also most importantly for my teammates," Bolin explained. "I enjoy being courageous going forward and always want to be an option when the team is attacking."

Did you know?

Bolin is close friends with fellow Hugo, Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Larsson. "He helps me a lot. It's nice to have someone who has made the same journey that I want to make," said Bolin of his former Malmö teammate, who made the move to Germany in 2023.

What they're saying

“Hugo is a character who has integrated outstandingly well here from day one and has fully embraced Borussia. He is working on himself with real focus and, in his first appearances, he has shown that he can bring us plenty of joy in the future too.” - Gladbach's head of sports Rouven Schröder

"After the first, half-hour training session on Tuesday, I said, 'He's good.' On Wednesday, after his first proper session, I said, 'He's very good.' And after the game, I say he's top-notch – I was very impressed with him.” - Gladbach head coach Eugen Polanski following Bolin's Bundesliga debut
