1. FSV Mainz 05 have beaten 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 2-0 (2-0) at the Voith-Arena on the final day of the Bundesliga season. Phillip Tietz (7.) and Nadiem Amiri (43.) scored for Mainz, condemning Heidenheim to relegation despite a spirited fightback that saw the hosts strike the woodwork twice in the second half.

The stakes could hardly have been higher at the Voith-Arena on Matchday 34. Heidenheim entered the final day of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season level on points with Wolfsburg and St. Pauli, needing a win against Mainz — and favourable results elsewhere — to secure the relegation play-off spot. Frank Schmidt's side had been extraordinary in the run-in, losing just once in their previous seven matches to haul themselves back into contention after being ten points adrift of safety. Mainz, meanwhile, arrived with their top-flight status already secured and certain to finish the campaign in mid-table.

Early Mainz blow

The atmosphere inside the Voith-Arena was electric, with the home supporters unveiling a stunning 'Crazy in Love' tifo before kick-off. However, the dream start Heidenheim craved soon turned to a nightmare. In the seventh minute, Kacper Potulski made a surging run down the left flank and delivered a cross from the by-line that looped up invitingly. Phillip Tietz, stationed almost on the goalline, needed only the faintest of touches to divert the ball into the net. The early goal sent shockwaves through the home crowd and shifted the win probability dramatically in Mainz's favour.

Woodwork and missed chances

Mainz continued to threaten and came agonisingly close to doubling their lead in the 12th minute when Tietz struck the crossbar from a Nadiem Amiri free-kick. Heidenheim responded with purpose — Arijon Ibrahimović fired narrowly wide in the 14th minute, and Eren Dinkçi forced a fine save from Daniel Batz nine minutes later. The hosts' best moment came on the half-hour mark when Marvin Pieringer struck the crossbar from close range after a fine pass from Jan Schöppner, with Ibrahimović's follow-up blocked. It was a moment that summed up Heidenheim's afternoon — so close, yet so far. Amiri then rattled the left post in the 35th minute, the third time the woodwork had been struck in a breathless first half.

Amiri kills the tie

Just as Heidenheim were beginning to find their rhythm, Mainz struck a devastating second blow two minutes before the break. Amiri received the ball from Tietz on the edge of the area, calmly waited for Frank Feller to commit, and slotted home with composure to make it 2-0. The goal, scored with an xG of 0.82, was a clinical finish that left Heidenheim with a mountain to climb at the interval. Patrick Mainka and his teammates trudged off at half-time with the home crowd stunned and with news of Wolfsburg leading at St. Pauli making the situation even more dire.

Heidenheim push hard after the break

Frank Schmidt made two changes at the interval, introducing Christian Conteh for Pieringer and Omar Haktab Traoré for Marnon Busch. Mainz also brought on Danny da Costa for Stefan Posch. Heidenheim came out with renewed energy and dominated the early stages of the second half. Schöppner headed against the crossbar from a Conteh cross in the 51st minute — the fourth time the woodwork had been struck in the match. Budu Zivzivadze was denied by a superb save from Batz in the 79th minute, but despite their pressure, Heidenheim simply could not find a way through a resolute Mainz defence, with Potulski outstanding throughout.

Batz the hero as Mainz hold firm

Batz was in inspired form throughout the second half, producing a string of crucial saves to preserve Mainz's clean sheet. In the 72nd minute, Mainka was on hand to clear a Jae-sung Lee effort off the line to prevent a third Mainz goal. Niklas Dorsch and Dinkçi were replaced by Adrian Beck and Mathias Honsak in the 73rd minute as Schmidt threw on his final options. Yellow cards were shown to Dinkçi and Sheraldo Becker in the 70th minute following a confrontation between the two players. As the final whistle blew, Heidenheim's three-year Bundesliga adventure came to an end, their remarkable late-season run ultimately falling just short.
