Fábio Vieira and Saïd El Mala were both on target in a tense battle between Hamburg and Cologne on Matchday 26, which ended 1-1 with both sides eager to further distance themselves from the drop zone.

The relegation battle in the Bundesliga intensified as Hamburg and Cologne faced off in a crucial encounter at the Volksparkstadion. After a recent victory at Wolfsburg, HSV had created a cushion of nine points to the direct relegation zone, while the Billy Goats arrived winless in five matches.

The reverse fixture had seen Köln triumph 4-1 after two HSV red cards, but the hosts made three changes for this clash with Warmed Omari, Fábio Vieira and Damion Downs coming into the starting lineup, the latter facing his former club.

Vieira brilliance cancelled out before break

In front of a sold-out crowd of 57,000, both sides struggled to create clear chances in a cagey first half. The visitors enjoyed more possession and territorial advantage, with El Mala and Jakub Kamiński both seeing shots blocked, but genuine opportunities remained scarce. That changed dramatically in the 39th minute when William Mikelbrencis played a wonderful ball into the path of Vieira, who produced a moment of magic.

The Portuguese midfielder executed an exquisite first-time lob with the outside of his left boot that sailed over Marvin Schwäbe and nestled into the far corner – a sublime finish from nearly 20 metres with an xG of just 0.0367. HSV's lead lasted only until the stroke of half-time, however. From a corner, van den Berg cleverly flicked the ball on at the near post, allowing El Mala to steal away from his marker and head home from close range to restore parity.

Late drama but no winner

The second half proved even more attritional than the first, with both managers making multiple changes to try and break the deadlock. Jean-Luc Dompé and Otto Stange replaced Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer and Downs for the hosts, while Linton Maina had already been introduced for Youssoupha Niang at half-time for Cologne. Despite these fresh legs, the match remained bogged down in midfield with neither goalkeeper seriously tested.

As the game entered its final stages, the importance of a potential winner grew, but the draw seemed increasingly likely. There was late drama, though, as both sides created golden opportunities deep into stoppage time. In the 95th minute, Dompé whipped in a corner that found substitute Daniel Elfadli, whose powerful header flew agonisingly wide of the right post. With practically the last action, Martel also headed wide when well-positioned. The final whistle confirmed a point apiece – a result that suited Hamburg slightly better in their battle to avoid the drop.

Man of the Match: Fábio Vieira

The Portuguese midfielder's quality shone throughout the match, but it was his moment of brilliance in the 39th minute that truly stood out. Vieira's sublime first-time praise with the outside of his boot demonstrated exceptional technique and vision, giving Hamburg the lead from a chance with just a 3.7% probability of resulting in a goal.

Beyond his striking contribution, the 25-year-old was a constant threat in attack while also coping well with Cologne's pressure, finding himself under pressure 18 times during the match. His performance earned him the highest fantasy points total (281) and a deserved Man of the Match award with 44% of the votes.
