How is on-loan Arsenal man Fábio Vieira keeping Hamburg afloat?
Fábio Vieira is brilliantly keeping Hamburg out of the Bundesliga relegation fight – what makes the on-loan Arsenal man so good?
In February, Vieira promised “I can be even better” after a goal and an assist in a month in which HSV went unbeaten and picked up seven of a possible nine points to significantly boost their survival hopes.
He bookended that with a goal in the 2-2 draw vs. Bayern Munich on Matchday 20 in late January and another strike in defeat to RB Leipzig on Matchday 24 in early March. Anyone who saw his goal against Cologne on Matchday 26 will be wondering whether he can top that world-class strike. Hamburg fans will be salivating at the prospect.

“As soon as I made eye contact with Willi [Mikelbrencis], I knew where he would play the ball. I’d also noticed that the ‘keeper was slightly off his line, and then I put it in the net,” explained Vieira in a pragmatic fashion that does little to suggest the off-the-cuff genius of his effort that lit up the 1-1 draw.
“It was definitely one of the top three goals I’ve scored. I’m very happy about that. I’m gaining more and more confidence now and I’m feeling like the old Fábio again. Coming to Hamburg was an important step for me to get back to my full potential.”
Fully unlocking that potential could be the key to Hamburg remaining in the top tier of German football this season after a long road back to the big time for the former ‘Dinosaur’ of the Bundesliga following their historic first-ever relegation in 2017/18.
After shining at Porto and being named player of the U21 EURO in 2021 when he guided Portugal to the final in a midfield alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha and in a team featuring Union Berlin’s Diogo Leite and VfB Stuttgart’s Tiago Tomás, Vieira joined Arsenal in 2022.
The 25-year-old still has a contract with the current English Premier League leaders through to June 2027, but so far the move to London has not worked out.
Only five of the 33 Premier League appearances he has made for the Gunners were starts and he scored just two top-flight goals before recovering some of his lost lustre on a return to former club Porto on loan last season.
"Fábio is a high-quality acquisition," Hamburg sporting director Stefan Kuntz had promised after wrapping up Vieira’s loan move late in the summer 2025 window. "He's a classic playmaker who'll bring a lot of creativity to the team. He will give our attack even more options."
After ironing out a bumpy start to life in Germany that featured two red cards and a knee injury within the league season’s first 10 Matchdays, Vieira has started to live up to Kuntz’s billing. He has already exceeded the eight goal involvements – four goals and as many assists – he had in 26 league games in Portugal last season.
His wonder strike against Cologne was his fifth this term in his 21st appearance, bringing him level with Rayan Philippe und Luka Vušković as Hamburg’s top scorers. He is also on a par with teammate Miro Muheim as the club’s top assister, but no one can match Vieira’s nine goal involvements across the northerners’ squad.

Vieira’s contributions have really counted too. In the five games without him this season, HSV average a point per match. With him in the side, the ratio is up 20% to 1.2. His goals have helped bring six points in the Bundesliga while his assists have contributed nine points to the tally. Where would Hamburg be without him? In real trouble, given that adds up to 15 points in a total of 30.
They would have been in an even better position too had his teammates taken more of the 21 chances he has created, and despite his slight build, he wins a muscular 51 per cent of his challenges as he allies industry to his inspiration for the team’s cause.
“That goal is definitely worth a second look,” HSV head coach Merlin Polzin said after the Cologne game. “Fábio sometimes makes decisions that are a huge improvement on the instructions that we the coaching staff give him. He’s brilliant when it comes to taking risks. I’m delighted for every minute we have with him.”
The question now is how much longer will they have him. With another year left on his Arsenal deal, Vieira could return to England in the summer. Hamburg reportedly have a purchase option, which their fans would surely love them to exercise. No one yet knows what will happen, even the man himself.
“Everyone knows I still have a contract with Arsenal. So let’s wait until the end of the season,” Vieira said after the Cologne match. “Then we’ll talk about it and see what we can do.”
