Bayer Leverkusen's Germany international Florian Wirtz is one of the Bundesliga's biggest stars. He already has last season's domestic double under his belt, but what does the future hold for the 21-year-old?

In an interview with Bayer Leverkusen's club magazine, Wirtz talked about his development, his ambitions and his plans for the future. For a young man who is already shouldering a lot of responsibility, he appeared remarkably relaxed.

After an outstanding 2023/24 season, in which Wirtz was instrumental as Leverkusen won both the Bundesiga and the DFB Cup, the Germany international is hungry for more success.

"We got a taste for it last season," explained Wirtz. "We definitely want more. We will try to get the maximum out of every competition, draw conclusions from the first half of the season and grow as a team again."

The young star is clearly focussed on his current situation, and the Leverkusen management team confirm this impression of a player keeping his eyes on the prize.

"He's enjoying it," observed coach Xabi Alonso. "He wants to stay here and he wants to play here."

Meanwhile Leverkusen's director of sport Simon Rolfes was keen to emphasise how precious the native of nearby Pulheim is to the club.

"His future is relatively simple in terms of his contract – we have him under contract until 2027 – and of course we want Florian to stay as long as possible," said Rolfes, who was key to signing Wirtz from rivals Cologne back in 2020. "That hasn't changed."

Wirtz himself is relaxed about the question of his long-term future.

"You'll read something at some point, and then you'll know," said Wirtz who at 21 already has 34 goals and 44 assists in 130 Bundesliga appearances.

"I'm extremely grateful to have been given a chance in the first team. I felt a great deal of trust and I had very good teammates and good coaches right from the start. I was given the room to develop here in peace."
