Deniz Undav’s double helps VfB Stuttgart breeze to victory over Augsburg
Deniz Undav struck twice and provided an assist for Ermedin Demirović as VfB Stuttgart ended Augsburg’s eight-game unbeaten run at the WWK Arena to strengthen their UEFA Champions League hopes.
Augsburg 2-5 VfB Stuttgart
Goals: 0-1 Undav 12’ (assist: Stiller), 0-2 Tomás 29’ (assist: Nartey), 0-3 Nartey 31’ (assist: Mittelstädt), 1-3 Rieder 57’ (assist: Claude-Maurice), 1-4 Undav 58’ (assist: Führich), 2-4 Kade 71’ (assist: Jakić), 2-5 Demirović 83’ (assist: Undav)
Stuttgart arrived at the WWK Arena looking to bounce back from their Europa League exit against Porto, facing an Augsburg side unbeaten in their last eight home matches.
Sebastian Hoeneß's men had won their last six competitive meetings with the Fuggerstädter and made five changes from their European disappointment.
Manuel Baum's Augsburg, meanwhile, had lost their last two Bundesliga matches against RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, but still maintained a healthy seven-point cushion above the relegation places.
Stuttgart race into three-goal lead
Stuttgart took control from the outset and were rewarded in the 12th minute when Deniz Undav capitalized on a handling error from Finn Dahmen to open the scoring.
The visitors continued to dominate and doubled their advantage on 29 minutes through Tiago Tomás, who finished clinically following good work from Nikolas Nartey.
Just two minutes later, it was Nartey himself who made it 3-0, converting Maximilian Mittelstädt's low cross from close range. A VAR review in the 43rd minute overturned a penalty initially awarded to Stuttgart, but the visitors went into the break with a commanding three-goal advantage.
Augsburg fight back but Stuttgart's quality prevails
In the second period, Augsburg's persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Fabian Rieder unleashed a powerful strike that flew past Alexander Nübel.
However, Stuttgart quickly restored their three-goal cushion as Undav grabbed his second just a minute later, finishing from Chris Führich's saved effort.
Augsburg refused to surrender and reduced the deficit again in the 71st minute through substitute Anton Kade, who converted after Kristijan Jakić's initial shot was saved, although any hopes of a comeback were extinguished in the 83rd minute when substitute Ermedin Demirović, with his first touch, converted Undav's unselfish pass to make it 5-2.
Man of the match: Deniz Undav
Undav delivered a masterclass performance that epitomized Stuttgart's attacking prowess. The German forward scored twice - opening the scoring in the 12th minute and restoring Stuttgart's three-goal advantage just after Augsburg had pulled one back. He displayed his all-round ability by providing an unselfish assist for Demirović's goal in the 83rd minute.
Beyond his goal contributions, Undav was a constant threat with four shots on target and intelligent movement that consistently troubled Augsburg's defence. His performance earned him the highest fantasy manager points (403) and was instrumental in Stuttgart extending their unbeaten run against Augsburg to nine matches.
