The 1.84-metre defender, who has made 17 competitive appearances for Cruzeiro so far, put pen-to-paper on a five-year deal that will keep him at Dortmund until 2031. He will join up with his new team ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Speaking upon the announcement, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said, "We are delighted to have signed Kauã. He is a highly talented player with a very versatile profile, and is capable of playing in several defensive positions within various systems. His tackling ability, robustness, and mentality will undoubtedly enrich our team next season.”

Meanwhile, Prates said, "I am very proud to be able to play for this great club from the summer. I am incredibly excited and I will give everything from day one in black and yellow to be successful with BVB.”

The defender joins a long line of Brazilians to play for the Black-Yellows. In fact, no other nation apart from Germany has had more players or combined appearances.

Prates would be the 16th from the South American country to represent BVB, having started with trailblazer Júlio César in 1994. Dedê holds the club record for most appearances by a non-German with 398.
