Borussia Dortmund's Giannis Konstantelias out for several months with ACL injury
Giannis Konstantelias is set to be sidelined for several months after suffering a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament during Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 win against Hamburg on Saturday.
Konstantelias had doubled Dortmund’s lead in first-half stoppage time but had to be taken off early in the second period after twisting his left leg awkwardly in the turf.
The 23-year-old, who joined Borussia from PAOK earlier this month, is now likely to miss a large part of the 2026/27 campaign.
“The news hits us hard because Giannis had shown in a very short time why we regard him as a great player here at Dortmund,” said Lars Ricken, BVB’s managing director for sport. “For now, though, all parties are focused on his recovery.”
Having impressed as a half-time substitute against Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, Konstantelias marked his full Borussia debut with a well-taken goal from Maximilian Beier’s pass - which took a deflection of Hamburg defender Sebastiaan Bornauw on its way in.
But his second-half injury means head coach Niko Kovač will have to make at least one change when his team travel to minnows Hamburg Eimsbüttel in the DFB Cup on Tuesday.
