The stakes could hardly have been higher as Borussia Dortmund welcomed Bayer Leverkusen to Signal Iduna Park. The Black-Yellows had the chance to secure Champions League football for next season following Hoffenheim's failure to win on Friday night, while the visitors were desperate for three points to maintain their own top-four ambitions.
Dortmund entered the clash as the Bundesliga's form team with four consecutive victories and just two defeats all season – both against Bayern Munich.
Leverkusen, meanwhile, had ended a run of three successive draws with a thrilling 6-3 triumph over Wolfsburg last time out and were seeking their third straight competitive win in Dortmund – a feat they had never previously achieved.
Hosts start brightly before Andrich strikes
Niko Kovač's men dominated the early proceedings with nearly 70 percent possession in the opening exchanges. Their first clear opportunity arrived after 18 minutes when Daniel Svensson's curling right-footed effort was heroically cleared off the line by birthday boy Loïc Badé.
The complexion of the match changed entirely three minutes before the interval when Andrich intercepted a loose pass from Ramy Bensebaini, took two touches, and unleashed a thunderous 28-metre strike that flew into the bottom corner past Gregor Kobel at 119 km/h.
Woodwork denies Guirassy as Leverkusen stand firm
The hosts' best opportunity fell to Serhou Guirassy in the 57th minute, but the striker couldn't keep his header down from Julian Ryerson's excellent cross while Leverkusen remained dangerous on the counter, with substitute Patrik Schick forcing a fine save from Kobel in the 61st minute.
The home side came agonisingly close to levelling in the 83rd minute when Guirassy's left-footed effort cannoned off Mark Flekken's crossbar but despite Dortmund's pressure in the closing stages, Leverkusen's disciplined defensive display secured a precious victory that breathes new life into their Champions League ambitions.
Man of the Match: Robert Andrich
The Leverkusen captain delivered a masterful all-round performance that proved decisive in this tight contest. His spectacular long-range strike – his first goal since Matchday 15 – was a moment of pure quality that ultimately separated the sides.
Beyond his match-winning contribution, Andrich was instrumental in disrupting Dortmund's rhythm, making crucial interventions and winning important tackles.
The midfielder's leadership was evident throughout as he marshalled Leverkusen's defensive shape, helping them withstand heavy pressure in the closing stages. His determined display was rewarded with the Man of the Match accolade, receiving 41% of the vote.
