The best free-kicks in Bundesliga history
Hammered past the wall or curled perfectly over into the top corner, the Bundesliga has seen some sublime free-kicks down the years.
Mehmet Scholl was one of German football’s original free-kick specialists, able to pick out the corner with apparent ease. Arjen Robben proved a natural at finding the far post whether the ball was dead or not.
Obviously the closer the free-kick, the greater the probability of finding the back of the net, but that hasn’t stopped players from trying their luck from much further out down the years. Hakan Çalhanoğlu once smashed one in from closer to the halfway line than the penalty area. Or how about Marcel Risse’s injury-time derby winner for Cologne against Borussia Mönchengladbach from pretty much on the touchline?
And for those who don’t care for finesse and much prefer to watch a hammer hit, there’s VfB Stuttgart’s Marcelo Bordon or Hertha Berlin’s Ronny.
