TV history made again as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Mönchengladbach
Forty years ago, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich made television history when their match on 11 December 1984 became the first to be shown live on TV in Germany. The same two teams were at the forefront of technology once again on Saturday when the Bavarians' 1-0 triumph was broadcast with a moving main camera.
It is a camera that never loses sight of the ball and misses almost nothing. One such device, which moves on a track under the stadium roof, was used for the first time as Bayern triumphed on Matchday 16.
The camera followed the ball around as it moved on Saturday, travelling along a 70-metre-long track and reaching up to 23.6 mph (38 km/h). That is even faster than Heidenheim's Sirlord Conteh, who set a new all-time Bundesliga speed record earlier this season after being clocked at 22.8 mph (36.82 km/h).
The track was installed on the roof of the main stand. From there, the almost bird-eye view was similar to that in the video game EA Sports FC 25, in which the majority of the outfield players can be seen.
As such, exactly 40 years and one month after history was made with the first live match on TV, Bayern and Gladbach heralded in the dawn of the next big techincal innovation.
