Kingsley Coman shines as Bayern Munich hammer Atletico Madrid in UEFA Champions League opener

Kingsley Coman was at it again in the UEFA Champions League, scoring two and creating another as Bayern Munich began their title defence with a thumping 4-0 win at home to Atletico Madrid in Group A on Wednesday.

Bayern Munich 4-0 Atletico Madrid
Goals: 1-0
Coman (28'), 2-0 Goretzka (41'), 3-0 Tolisso (66'), 4-0 Coman (72')

Having scored Bayern's last goal in the competition last season - the winner in the final against Paris Saint-Germain in August - Coman got the first for Hansi Flick's side in 2020/21 to give the hosts the lead their dominance deserved just before the half-hour mark. Collecting a sensational crossfield pass from Joshua Kimmich on the left, the Frenchman controlled the ball before slotting coolly past Jan Oblak into the far corner. Atletico were content to invite Bayern forward and wait for opportunities on the break, and there were a couple of presentable openings for Yannick Carrasco and Luis Suarez, but Manuel Neuer was never seriously troubled in the first 45 minutes. Instead, Bayern went into the break two goals to the good when Leon Goretkza provided a ruthless drilled finish to Coman's cross to cap a swift counter-attack.

Atletico were not about to simply give up though, and they emerged for the second half with renewed purpose. Joao Felix thought he had pulled a goal back within two minutes of the restart, but his volley was rightly chalked off for Suarez obstructing Neuer's view in an offside position. Suarez had another sight of goal just moments later, but former Atletico defender Lucas Hernandez nipped in to poke the ball off his toe just in time. Where the visitors were wasteful in the final third, Bayern showed them how it was done in masterful fashion. Tolisso put the outcome of the game beyond all doubt midway through the half, rifling in a long-range thunderbolt and Coman put the seal on a win that will have sent shockwaves around Europe with a brilliant solo goal in the closing stages.

Match stats

  • Neuer registered his 200th clean sheet in all competitions for Bayern.
  • Robert Lewandowski was the top scorer in the Champions League last season with 15 goals. Suarez scored five for Barcelona before his summer move to Atletico.
  • Bayern left-back Hernandez played more than 100 games with Atletico - winning a UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup along the way - before moving to the Allianz Arena last summer.
  • Alphonso Davies is Hernandez's primary competition in the side. Last season he had four assists in eight games on the way to becoming the first Canadian to win the Champions League.
  • Atletico were runners-up in this competition in 2014 and 2016. Bayern completed the continental treble last term, becoming six-time European champions in the process.
  • Bayern beat Atletico in the 1974 European Cup final. Their all-time head-to-head record reads: three wins for Bayern, two for Atleti, with one draw.
  • Atletico have won two and drawn two of their opening four games domestically; Bayern have won three and lost one.

As it happened!

FULL TIME!

The final whistle blows and as statements of intent go, this is a message that will be received loud and clear across the rest of Europe. Bayern were just too good here, their passing more crisp and their finishing more clinical.

90' TWO MORE MINUTES

We're into stoppage time now, as Atletico have another free-kick just outside Bayern's penalty area, but it comes to nothing.

88' ALABA TO THE RESCUE

Lodi finds a rare pocket of space on the left wing and drives forward before hitting a low cross into the centre - but Alaba is first to it and clears for a corner.

85' FREE-KICK FOR JOAO FELIX

Correa wins a free-kick right on the edge of the Bayern penalty area, slightly to the left, but Joao Felix's effort is over the bar and doesn't trouble Neuer.

83' FRESH LEGS FOR BAYERN

Flick makes a triple substitution: Choupo-Moting comes on for Lewandowski, Davies for Müller and Martinez for Goretzka.

79' TWO MORE CHANGES FOR ATLETICO

Llorente and Koke are replaced by Torreira and Lemar.

78' BAYERN STILL PUSHING

Atletico are still getting forward as they bid for a consolation goal, but Bayern are still hungry for more. The Reds are hogging the ball (70 per cent of possession) and still probing, poking at the Atletico defence for more space.

75' TWO CHANGES FOR ATLETICO

Suarez is replaced by Correa, while Vitolo takes Carrasco's place.

73' DOUBLE SUB FROM BAYERN

Coman and Pavard go off, Douglas Costa and Bouna Sarr come on.

72' GOAL! STUNNER FROM COMAN!

Simply brilliant from Coman. Sprinting forward on the right on the counter, Felipe comes across to block his route to goal. Coman cuts inside on to his left foot and almost immediately cuts back on to his right, leaving the defender stranded, before squeezing his shot past Oblak and in at the back post.

66' GOAL! PILEDRIVER FROM TOLISSO!

An absolutely stunning strike from Tolisso has surely put the result beyond all doubt. Atleti half-clear Kimmich's free-kick but the ball falls to Tolisso, 30 yards out and slightly left of centre. The Frenchman wastes no time in setting himself to shoot, rifling an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

64' CARRASCO SMASHES IT WIDE

Atletico's patience in defending around the edge of their own penalty area almost pays off as Herrera nicks the ball off Kimmich and the Spaniards immediately break forward.

They've got four attackers against two defenders, but Carrasco - on the left-hand edge of the six-yard box - lashes a shot wide of the post under pressure from Süle.

61' MÜLLER FIRES WIDE

A long spell of pressure from Bayern, who keep the ball well around Atleti's penalty area. Pavard meets a cross from the left at the back post and heads it back across goal, where Müller is lurking. He takes it first time on the half-volley but skews his shot wide.

58' MAGNIFICENT FROM ALABA

The Austrian arrows a long ball from the back straight to the feet of Coman, about 60 yards ahead of him on the left. He jinks inside and crosses for Lewandowski, but a defender just gets a head on the ball to clear.

55' GAME OPENING UP

The away side are beginning to commit more numbers forward now as they seek a way back into the game. That's giving Bayern a bit more room on the break, and they almost take advantage as Pavard overlaps on the right to receive a pass from Tolisso, but Lewandowski isn't able to get a shot away in time.

52' HERNANDEZ OFF TARGET

Kimmich's corner from the right is headed clear, about 10 yards outside the penalty area. It sits up nicely for Hernandez, who fires a low shot at goal that whizzes wide of the post.

50' ATLETICO GO CLOSE AGAIN

Anorher nervy moment for Bayern as Joao Felix slides a pass into the path of Suarez, who is about to pull the trigger when Hernandez nips in to poke it off his toe. The ball rolls towards Bayern's far post and is probably going wide, but Pavard hooks it clear just to be on the safe side.

47' JOAO FELIX EFFORT DISALLOWED

The Portugal international volleys in from 16 yards out, but it's rightly chalked off as Suarez was obstructing Neuer's view from an offside position.

46' SECOND HALF!

Atletico get the ball rolling once again. No changes on either side at the interval.

HALF-TIME!

Bayern take a deserved lead into the break thanks to two clinical finishes against one of the stingiest defences in Europe. Atletico have had a couple of chances to score, but the Reds have defended stoutly to keep them out.

45' WIDE FROM LEWANDOWSKI

Müller, wide on the right, cuts on to his left foot and whips a superb pass towards the back post to Lewandowski. Trippier just blocks his view enough to put him off though, and the Polish striker heads it wide.

41' GOAL! GORETZKA MAKES IT TWO!

This is a lovely finish from Goretzka. Bayern win possession on the halfway line as the ball falls to Lewandowski. He strides forward and plays in Coman on the left. He twists and turns in the box and squares a lovely pass to Goretzka, on the other side of the area. The 25-year-old takes a touch to control before arrowing an unstoppable drive into the far corner.

39' HERRERA HEADS OVER

Carrasco delivers a corner from the left to the near post, where Herrera gets a glancing header on it. The direction is good, towards the back post, but it loops safely over the bar without causing Neuer too much trouble.

36' NEUER COMMANDING

Llorente nicks the ball off Hernandez's foot wide on the right for Atletico and floats a cross into the middle, where Suarez has found space between Süle and Alaba. Neuer is as alert as ever though, and darts out to pluck the ball out of the air.

32' SUPERB FROM SÜLE

Felix initiates an attack for Atletico and the ball is worked to Carrasco, on the left-hand corner of the Bayern box. He tries to take on Süle, but the Germany international anticipates the move on the outside and swats Carrasco away fairly.

28' GOAL! COMAN BREAKS THE DEADLOCK!

After Goretzka's attempted shot from the edge of the area is blocked, Kimmich does brilliantly to slide tackle Felix and keep possession. He spies Coman making a darting run and pings a stunning diagonal pass into his feet. The Frenchman controls it and buries it into the far corner.

The same duo that combined for the winner in the final in August have linked up to score Bayern's first Champions League goal this season too!

27' WIDE FROM SUAREZ

Carrasco twists between Kimmich and Pavard on the left and pulls the ball back to Suarez, about 15 yards out. He has a clear sight of goal but miscues his shot and holds his head as it bobbles wide.

26' SÜLE UP FOR A CORNER

Kimmich swings in a corner from the right and finds Süle at the back post, but his header lacks power and the visitors can clear.

23' NO WAY PAST NEUER

A neat one-two on the edge of the area between Carrasco and Joao Felix, with the former slipping through for a free shot at goal, wide on the left. He strikes it well, but Neuer's positioning is so good that he makes it look like an easy save.

21' MÜLLER BOOKED

A bit of a strange one here as Trippier arrives late to try to block Müller's pass, but instead it's the Bayern attacker who sees a yellow card.

18' OBLAK DENIES TOLISSO

A quick break from Bayern and they go close as Coman tears forward down the left, waiting patiently for Tolisso on the overlap. His attempted cross-shot, with Lewandowski lurking at the back post, is parried out for a corner by Oblak.

15' SÜLE HITS THE POST!

Müller flicks on a corner from the right and it comes to Süle at the back post. His volley beats Oblak but bounces off the upright and away!

13' CONTRASTING PRESSES

While Bayern are hounding Atletico on the edge of their own penalty area in a bid to recover possession, the Spaniards prefer to wait until Bayern cross the halfway line before attacking them, hoping to capitalise on any mistakes to counter.

10' GORETZKA BLOCKED

Kimmich keeps possession well in midfield and dribbles forward, eventually flicking it to his right to Goretzka. He has space to shoot from around 25 yards and does so, but his effort is blocked as it enters the penalty area.

7' LEWANDOWSKI WIDE

Bayern get forward for the first time in the match, with Coman scurrying down the left wing. His cross to the back post is met by Lewandowski arriving at pace, but his side-footed volley whistles just wide of the post.

6' EASY FOR NEUER

Ateltico try a training ground routine, but the cross is an easy take for Neuer.

5' ALABA BOOKED

The Bayern centre-half goes into the referee's notebook following a foul on Suarez, giving Atletico a free-kick about 10 yards outside the penalty area on the left-hand corner.

3' SUAREZ INCHES AWAY!

Lodi delivers an inviting ball across the face of goal from the left, aiming for Suarez at the back post. He stretches for it and it only needs a touch to go in, but the cross just has too much pace on it, allowing Bayern to breathe a sigh of relief.

2' EARLY PRESSURE

Hernandez concedes a corner early on, which is cleared at the near post - but only for another corner. The second one is delivered deeper, but Bayern head clear.

1' KICK-OFF!

Peep-peep! Bayern get the ball rolling!

OUT ON THE PITCH

The teams are lined up, just awaiting the Champions League anthem and then the obligatory coin toss. We're almost there now!

FLICK ON COSTA'S PLACE ON THE BENCH

Summer arrival Douglas Costa would arguably have been the most likely candidate to come in for Gnabry, but Flick has explained why he is only among the substitutes for the moment.

"He's not yet at 100 per cent," said the 55-year-old tactician. "He can't start yet. We want to introduce him gradually. We also hope that Leroy Sane will able to come back soon."

ANOTHER NIGHTMARE FOR SUAREZ?

Atletico's Uruguayan striker was part of the Barcelona side that suffered an 8-2 humbling against Bayern just a couple of months ago in the 2019/20 quarter-finals.

The 33-year-old did find that net that night, scoring early in the second half to make the score 4-2, but was powerless to prevent Flick's side's march to the title.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

These teams last met in the group stage of the 2016/17 Champions League season, each winning 1-0 at home.

Those were two of four encounters between the two in 2016, with the Spaniards edging through to the final on away goals, following up a 1-0 home win with a 2-1 defeat in Munich.

Overall Bayern have won three of the six fixtures against Atletico over the years, drawing one and losing twice.

ATLETICO TEAM NEWS

Diego Simeone has made five changes to the side that beat Celta Vigo on Saturday: Felipe, Renan Lodi, Herrera, Carrasco and Joao Felix all come in for Hermoso, Manuel Sanchez, Torreira, Lemar and Diego Costa, who is sidelined with muscular complaints. Saul Niguez is also absent through injury.

BAYERN TEAM NEWS

Bayern coach Hansi Flick has stuck with Lucas Hernandez at left-back against his former club, with Alphonso Davies continued to be afforded an extended rest, as the head coach confirmed earlier this week.

Elsewhere, Corentin Tolisso comes into the side for Serge Gnabry, who is isolating after testing positive for coronavirus, meaning Leon Goretzka will probably play further forward, and Thomas Müller drifting wider.
