Bayern Munich's Aleksandar Pavlović: 'We just have to keep pushing'
After an important Klassiker win over Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich's Aleksandar Pavlović sat down to discuss the victory and his role in Vincent Kompany's team.
Bundesliga: Saturday's Klassiker was a great advertisement for the league, and was exciting right up until the final whistle. What were your feelings during the game?
Aleksandar Pavlović: “It was a great day for us - a great win. It was not an easy game against Dortmund, who are in very good form at the moment. They played well, especially in the first half. In the second half we grew into the game, took control and deservedly won in the end.”

Bundesliga: The win saw you extend your lead over Dortmund at the top of the table to 11 points. How important was that for the remainder of the season?
Pavlović: “Very important. We really wanted to win this match and take the three points, and we managed to do that. Now we're 11 points ahead, but it is about continuing and not relaxing. We approach every game the same way. There are still several matches to play, so we just have to keep pushing.”
Bundesliga: You and your teammates are also going well in the UEFA Champions League, where you will face Atalanta in the last 16. What do you expect from that tie and the tournament in general between now and the end of the season?
Pavlović: “I am pleased that we're not playing another German team. I'm looking forward to the match and we want to win. Atalanta defend very well, like a typical Italian side, and they look to counter-attack.
Watch: Pavlović's stellar season under the spotlight

"We have to be alert in our defensive positioning and play our game. If you want to win the Champions League, you have to beat everyone. It does not matter to me who we face. We take it step by step and see what comes next.”
Bundesliga: What influence has Vincent Kompany had on you, and what does he demand most from you in your position?
Pavlović: “He helps a lot because he knows exactly how things work at this level. He played at the highest level himself and was a defender, so he can give valuable advice to everyone, whether in defence or attack. He does that very well.”
Bundesliga: In the Bundesliga, you have had the third-most touches, while you also have the best pass completion rate of all midfielders. Where does this composure at such a young age come from, and how do you train for that?
Pavlović: "That has always been my game. I always want the ball and I try to play with calmness. With top players around me who put me in good positions and with whom I can combine well, it becomes easier. It does not matter to me whether it is training or a match. I just play my game."
Bundesliga: Do you see yourself more as a defensive anchor who provides cover and stability, or as a playmaker who dictates the game and sets the rhythm?
Pavlović: “I would say a bit of both. With the ball I try to control the game, bring calmness and play good passes. Defending is just as important. I try to implement what the coach asks of us, to be active and close spaces.
"It is a good mix. Defensively it is about small details – when the ball is out wide, moving towards the edge of the box and closing off the cut-back. Those details matter.”
Bundesliga: You have received high praise recently, with Germany legend Lothar Matthäus comparing you to Toni Kroos. What do you think about that comparison, and who were your role models growing up?
Pavlović: “When Lothar Matthäus compares you with Toni Kroos, it's nice to hear, but there's still a long way to go. I have to stay grounded and keep working hard. Sergio Busquets was a player I looked up to in my position. Of course Kroos as well, especially towards the end of his career. I got to know him in the national team, and it was great to watch and learn from him. Also Xavi and Andrés Iniesta, as well as Bastian Schweinsteiger - they are the players for me.”
Bundesliga: In yourself, Jamal Musiala and Lennart Karl, Bayern have three young German players in the starting XI on a regular basis. What does it mean to you to be part of a new generation at the club?
Pavlović: “It's great fun, especially because we're all around the same age and understand each other’s humour. On the pitch, they're brilliant players to combine with, to play quick passes with. I try to put them in good positions so they can create something in attack. It's simply enjoyable to play with them. We also have a laugh off the pitch and make jokes. That's part of it.”
