Full-time: Mainz 0-0 Paderborn

The game ends in the first goalless draw of the new Bundesliga season as both sides rather cancelled each other out. Mainz looked the more likely and did hit the bar through Tietz, but that was one of the relatively few opportunities.

Hansen in the book

The Paderborn man hauls down Königsdörffer off the ball and earns himself a yellow card.

Chance wasted

Tietz suddenly has space in the box after a long ball forward, and he looks to curl home a finish from the angle but gets it completely wrong and rather limply chips the ball into the gloves of Noll.
68'

First changes of the day

Paderborn bring on Tigges for Marino, and Königsdörffer and Ruoppi replace Lee and Becker.

The closest we've come

That flicked header from Tietz that bounced off the crossbar remains the closest we've come to a goal today.
62'

A simple stop

Becker battles for possession on the edge of the box, leading to the loose ball dropping for Caci. He strikes it first time, but his effort is easy for Noll to gather.

Kick-off!

Half-time: Mainz 0-0 Paderborn

One final dangerous Mainz cross comes into the box just before the break, but nobody is there to meet it, and we go in level at 0-0. It's been an even opening 45 with chances at a premium, although Tietz did strike the bar with a header. It's a game that needs a goal to really kick into life.

Some good football sees Vidović burst into the box at pace, but he is crowded out before he can shoot.
31'

Almost

Marino almost gets to a low Curda cross before Gruber, but the Mainz defender does well to divert the ball behind for a corner.

Curda providing width

The Paderborn full-back has had a couple of good opportunities in the opening 30 minutes, and his width is providing the visitors with a real outlet.
25'

Curda prods wide

Paderborn try to get forward quickly and, after an initial interception, the ball drops to Pieringer, who sends in an early cross to Curda, but he can only poke his shot wide on the stretch.

A lack of chances

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).

It's just the one change for Paderborn from their cup success. Pieringer, who has just returned to Paderborn after three years in Heidenheim, is in the starting XI just a few days after his return.

Watch: Welcome to Mainz

Urs Fischer on facing Paderborn

"Paderborn are a team with a lot of intensity, they like to have the ball and they want to play. They also repeatedly trigger their press in a 5‑2‑3. They do that well, but there are also opportunities when we feel we can hurt them."

Ralf Kettemann on facing Mainz

"Lots of things remain the same, but there are also lots of new things. We need to maintain our focus. They have a lot of experience at Mainz. They're an established Bundesliga side and have an experienced coach. They stick to what they do, win lots of games by doing their thing."

Unrivalled Urs

Urs Fischer has averaged 1.6 points per game since taking charge of Mainz last year, giving him the best record in the club's Bundesliga history.

Last time out - Mainz

Mainz began their campaign in exhilarating fashion after recording a 9-0 victory in the DFB Cup first round against fifth-tier side Krieschow. Phillip Tietz (pictured) - who scored six Bundesliga goals last term - struck four, in addition to Nadiem Amiri's superb free-kick from distance.

Last time out - Paderborn

Paderborn took the win expected of them to book their place in the second round of the DFB Cup after beating Phönix Lübeck 4-2. Notably, Gabriel Vidović struck on his debut for the Bundesliga's newly promoted side.
