Full-time: Mainz 2-0 St. Pauli

The home side get a huge three points in their quest for European qualification. It wasn’t pretty, with St. Pauli stubborn throughout and causing plenty of problems on the break, but Mainz deserve their win. They were tidy in possession and, when the big chance fell to Lee, the South Korean didn’t flinch. Nebel added a late second to kill them off. Pauli will take heart, if not points, from another spiky showing.

Nebel doubles Mainz's lead!

Pauli have pushed so high and left acres of space at the back. Mainz take charge in midfield and, after a few neat passes, send a ball over the top and into the path of Nebel. The midfielder, unchallenged as he bears down on goal, races into the area, picks his spot, and strokes it calmly past Vasilj to kill the game

Irvine should score!

True, wide on the right, cuts inside his defender and sends a whipping ball across the box. Irvine, just a few yards from goal, has a golden opportunity to score but heads it over the bar.

Lee hands Mainz the lead!

After a spell of Mainz pressure, Amiri thumps a powerful shot at goal from the right channel, just outside the Pauli box. Vasilj gets low but fails to catch the effort and can only watch on as it dribbles away from him. Lee is on hand to poke home from close range.

Half-time: Mainz 0-0 St. Pauli

The visitors have made a name for themselves this season being stubborn and tough to break down, and it's not hard to see why. Mainz have had more of the ball but there's no way through those white shirts – 0.1 xG evidence of their troubles so far. Pauli were denied a penalty and hit the post through Weißhaupt. They look dangerous on the counter. But it's all square.
44'

High and wide from Treu

Ritzka sprints after a searching ball down the left flank and angles a cross back over the area, where Treu awaits. It's just a little too high for the winger, though, and he sends it ballooning out for a goal kick.
42'

Relentless as ever

It's rare any opponent outruns this physical Pauli side and today appears to be no different.

Great move!

Mainz work the ball down the left flank before Caci collects in the inside channel and passes into the feet of Weiper, marked inside the area. The target man holds off his defender and knocks it back into the path of Caci, who storms into the area to strike it. It's a lovely passage of play but the shot is weak and Vasilj collects.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
It's not been a half littered with gilt-edged scoring chances, but the visitors have had the better of things so far.

Pauli begin to boss the match, knocking the ball around confidently and working it forward into wide areas. Irvine at the centre of everything, pulling strings in midfield and urging his team forward. No goal yet though.

Eggestein should score!

Pauli take a throw in from the right and Eggestein flicks on to Saad, who is lurking near the Mainz area. The forward plays a cute pass back into the path of Eggestein, who races into the box and shoots. Zentner makes himself big and parries. A huge chance for the visitors.

Careless play

The away side are struggling to keep hold of the ball whenever they win it back. Sloppy passing and a suffocating Mainz press making life hard so far.

Fans cry penalty!

Burkardt races after a long ball down the right flank and cuts it back into the box for strike partner Weiper. The forward takes a touch towards goal but is flattened by former team-mate Nemeth. Supporters are up in arms but replays show the defender merely stood his ground. No chance.

Mainz take charge

The home side are calm and confident in possession in the opening minutes, dragging Pauli from left to right with some neat passages of play.

Saad is brought down on the edge of the Mainz box, just inside the D, to win a free kick. Smith tries to curl it delicately over the wall and into the top right corner but he gets it wrong and the ball floats into the stands.

One change for Pauli

Blessin makes just one amendment to the side that lost 1-0 at home to Freiburg last weekend, with Ritzka coming to replace the injured Sands on the left flank.

Alexander Blessin on facing Mainz

"When they visited us earlier in the campaign, their coach was under massive pressure. Then they put a run together and they now find themselves sixth in the table. They stayed calm and showed what can be achieved with patience and hard work. But I believe we'll have our chances."

Bo Henriksen on facing St. Pauli

"They're a very good team. But we want to go into the game and execute our own plan. There are only good teams at this level, so we need to give 100 percent every single weekend and this game is no different."

Early team news

Only Stefan Bell is unavailable for Mainz, although that short list of absentees is in contrast the Pauli's. They are without eight players for this clash, including Morgan Guilavogui and James Sands, while Connor Metcalfe could also join them on the sidelines.

Mainz strong at home

Since Bo Henriksen's appointment as head coach, Mainz have won 56% of their home games - that is higher than any other Mainz coach.

Struggling for goals

Pauli may have only conceded 25 goals this term, but they have had trouble putting the ball in the back of the net at the other end. They have managed just 18 strikes, failing to score in 12 different matches. They will need to be more clinical against the Zero-fivers.
camera-photo

Second-best season

Only once before, in 2011/12, have Mainz had more than their current 35 points after 22 games. They also have the second-best defence in the Bundesliga as it stands, conceding just 24 goals.

Tale of the tape

Mainz have not lost any of their past nine Bundesliga matches against Pauli, their best current run against any side in the top flight (along with Bochum). Pauli, though, did win the last time these two teams met in the Bundesliga 2 in 2009.

A home banker?

Mainz have won all three Bundesliga meetings with Pauli, while they are also unbeaten in their last seven league games at home. The Kiezkicker, meanwhile, are the only team in Germany's top three divisions yet to draw away from home (W4, L7).
