Full-time: Mainz 1-1 Union

Both teams take a share of the spoils but it's Union, who equalised here through a Robin Gosens' strike, who will be the happier as they maintain their three-point cushion above the drop zone. Jonathan Burkardt had given Mainz the lead late in the first half of this rescheduled fixture but a draw here means the hosts remain in the relegation places.

Half-time: Mainz 1-1 Union

A very exciting first-half of football ends with two goals right at the death. With the rain teeming down at a damp WWK Arena, Jonathan Burkardt looked to have given Mainz a lead to take into the break. Robin Gosens stuck to the task, however, and his opportunistic strike at the far post brought parity before the teams headed in for a deserved cool down.

Union are level!

Amazing! Just when it looked as though Union were headed into the break with a deficit, Robin Gosens has levelled! Janik Haberer's deep cross from the right fooled the Mainz defence, who thought the ball was going out of play. Gosens watched it all the way before connecting and scoring at the back stick!

Head-to-head

In the nine Bundesliga games played out between these sides, Mainz have won just one. A scoreless draw at the WWK Arena in 2022/23 was preceded by a 2-1 victory in the German capital. Don't forget that on the opening day of the current campaign, Die Eisernen won 4-1.

"Keep Union penned in"

Mainz coach Jan Siewert's message to his players ahead of this rescheduled game was to be, "... clinical when we’re attacking and avoid long balls [and] to get stuck in and keep [Union] penned in." In terms of the 05ers' place in the Bundesliga basement, the 41-year-old added, "We’re three points from safety, but would love it to be three fewer after the game. We’ve got to make it clear that something good is happening here."
camera-photo

"Goal is to win"

With Union coach Nenad Bjelica suspended, his assistant, Marie-Louise Eta, fielded questions from the media in yesterday's pre-match press conference. "The boys know exactly what's at stake and it's our goal to win this game against Mainz," she explained ahead of this evening's encounter. "Of course the relegation battle won't end if we pick up three points [this time]. That takes some of the pressure off the players, because we still have enough chances after this game to get the points we need," Eta added.

Changing fortunes

Mainz won their first game under Jan Siewert, beating Leipzig 2-0, but are currently nine without a win (D5, L4). Union also went through a change of coach towards the end of 2023, with Nenad Bjelica replacing Urs Fischer. Die Eisernen have collected 10 points from a possible 21 on his watch, compared to six in their first 11 games of the campaign under his predecessor.
