Denied!

Leverkusen have men over as Bakker sends a ball into the Bremen box. Azmoun and Palacios get in each other's way, though, allowing Werder to scramble clear.

Double change

Sinkgraven's on to shore up the Leverkusen defence, while Azmoun will look to hold the play up in the final third.

Füllkrug on the spot!

No complaints from Hincapie as he's penalised for a handball in the box. Füllkrug steps up to take the penalty, waits for Hradecky to make his move and tucks the ball into the opposite corner. The comeback is on!

Leverkusen have daylight. Adli races up the left and crosses for Hlozek, who steers a fine flicked header beyond Pavlenka's despairing dive.

Leverkusen will stay in ninth place whatever happens, but the gap to seventh - which could yet be enough for European qualification - will be cut to two points with a win.

Hradecky to the rescue!

Füllkrug gets the better of Kossounou in the box and fires goalwards from a tight angle, forcing a brilliant diving save from Hradecky. That could be a huge moment in the game!

Bayer change

Frimpong makes way, no doubt with a view to Thursday's Europa League second leg at Ferencvaros. The more defensively minded Tapsoba is on.

Worth a go!

Andrich takes on a shot from range, but it's straight down the throat of Pavlenka. This is really starting to open up...

Jung!

The Bremen defender has a crack, albeit volleying too close to Hradecky to seriously trouble the Leverkusen No.1. Encouraging response, though...

Leverkusen lead!

So hard on Bremen. Weiser has a goal-bound shot blocked on the edge of the area, with the fall falling kindly for Diaby, who instigates a quick breakaway. Palacios feeds Frimpong, who cuts inside of Jung and nestles a shot past Pavlenka with the aid of a massive deflection.

Wide!

Leverkusen threaten with Diaby. He rolls the ball across the edge of the area for Andrich, who drags a first-time effort wide. That really opened up for the Bayer midfielder - he had to test Pavlenka in that position!

Danger!

Weiser pings a cross into the box from the right. Stage makes a move, but his shot is blocked by Kossounou. The Bremen right-back - who spent three years at Leverkusen - has seven assists so far this season...

Leverkusen Bakker in it!

What a response! Frimpong crosses into the box for Diaby, who completely misses the ball. Bakker doesn't, though, and smashes a volley into the top corner. That all started deep in the Bayer half with Palacios' brilliant through-ball to Adli. Game on!

The Czech forward wriggles free inside the area and tries to guide the ball into the far bottom corner, but it goes wide. So close!

This time it counts!

Leverkusen fail to deal with another ball up towards the edge of the area. Füllkrug wins the bouncing ball after good work by Schmidt, the Bremen striker slipping a pass to his right for Ducksch. He wraps his right foot around the ball and smashes one high past the on-rushing Hradecky.

Bremen play over the top for Ducksch. He's in-between Frimpong and Tah on the edge of the area, but sends a hurried effort wide. The Bremen striker had way more time and space than he realised.

Watch: Highlights of the 1-1 draw between these two sides in September

Veljkovic cancelled out Demirbay's opener when these two teams last faced each other.

Head-to-head

Leverkusen have dominated this match-up in recent years, losing just one of their last 11 matches against the 'Werderaner'. The last three meetings, however, have all ended in draws, with the last winner coming when the 'Werkself" prevailed 4-1 in 2020.

Leverkusen team news

Exequiel Palacios, Robert Andrich, Piero Hincapie, Amine Adli and Adam Hlozek are cycled back into the side, with the in-form Azmoun among those that drop to the the bench. Florian Wirtz is rested, while Patrik Schick is not risked after showing a reaction in training.

Early team news

Former Leverkusen man Mitchell Weiser is set to return to the starting XI against his old club after getting half an hour from the bench last week following an ankle injury, although captain Marco Friedl is out through illness. Die Werkself, meanwhile, have good news in the form of Jeremie Frimpong shrugging off a knock and their long-term injury-list has now been reduced to just Charles Aranguiz and Andrey Lunev.

Werner: "Two key points to success"

Home boss Ole Werner says there are "two key points" to beating Leverkusen today, saying: “We have to make sure not to create too big gaps going forward and not to lose the ball cheaply when we have possession; these are the two key points.”

Alonso: "We're on the right track"

Leverkusen were excellent against Hertha last time out in the Bundesliga and collected a European victory in midweek, prompting coach Xabi Alonso to challenge his side to finally find a consistent formula that has so far proved elusive this term. "Our biggest challenge is to be consistent in the busy period ahead," he said. "We're on the right track at the moment and I'm very happy with that."

Bayer have blown hot and cold in 2023, but they had too much for relegation-threatened Hertha on Matchday 23 - their fourth league win of the year.

Watch: Augsburg 2-1 Bremen

Werder suffered their 11th defeat of the season, and fifth in eight matches since the turn of the year last time out.

European ambitions?

Promoted Bremen are in the relative comforts of mid-table after 23 matches. Leverkusen are a point better off, and begin the weekend only four points adrift of seventh place, which may very well offer them a route into Europe, given the likelihood of one of the current top six winning the DFB Cup.
