DARIDA JUST WIDE

Chances continue to go begging for Hertha as Mittelstädt's cut-back is cleared from in front of the Schalke goal. Darida is set up in front of goal but he curls his effort over the bar. He's had two assists already today, that would've been a treat for him.

KICK-OFF COMING UP!

It's a cold night in the German capital as football returns to German on the second day of the New Year. Will it be Hertha or Schalke who enjoy can make their New Year's wishes come true at the first time of asking? Let's find out...

HARSH REALITY

As Schalke begin 2021 they know they face a relegation fight for the rest of the season. The Royal Blues are rock bottom and sit six points adrift of Arminia Bielefeld in the relegation play-off spot. Without a win since January of last year, time is running out for them to turn things around.

A NEW, BRIGHTER ERA?

Tonight's game will be the first under the stewardship of Christian Gross, who spent a spell at Schalke's Ruhr rivals VfL Bochum during his playing days and has been out of work since February, when his third stint in charge of Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli came to an end. He previously led Grasshopper Zürich to two Swiss Super League titles, earning him a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. He then returned to Switzerland and won the Swiss top flight four more times in charge of Basel, before spending less than a year at the helm of Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart in 2009.
