Title
Schalke secured promotion to the Bundesliga after beating Fortuna Düsseldorf at home on Matchday 32. They were confirmed as Bundesliga 2 champions the following day after Paderborn failed to beat Elversberg.

Promotion
With Elversberg, Hannover and Paderborn level on 59 points heading into the final matchday, it was all to play for. Elversberg prevailed, beating relegated Preußen Münster 3-0 to secure a maiden promotion to the Bundesliga.

Play-off
Paderborn finished third after a 2-0 victory over Darmstadt, meaning they will play Wolfsburg in the play-off. Hannover missed out completely following a 3-3 draw against Nuremberg.

Safety
Heading into the final weekend, Dynamo Dresden and Magdeburg couldn't finish any lower than 16th and, after a win and loss respectively, both teams will be playing Bundesliga 2 football next season.
They will be joined by Arminia Bielefeld, who brushed aside Hertha Berlin in emphatic fashion, winning 6-1, and Eintracht Braunschweig, despite their 1-0 loss at champions Schalke.
Relegation
Greuther Fürth needed to beat Fortuna Düsseldorf by three or more goals to climb above their direct relegation rivals, and they did just that. It means that the Clover Leaves will play Rot-Weiss Essen for a place in next season's Bundesliga 2, while Fortuna follow Münster into Germany's 3. Liga.

Promotion from the 3. Liga
Osnabrück secured their Bundesliga 2 return as champions of the 3. Liga with two games to spare. They will be joined by Energie Cottbus following their narrow 1-0 victory over Jahn Regensburg on the final matchday.
As mentioned, Essen finished third to set up a play-off date with destiny.
