Greuther Fürth to revert back to club's former name

Members of Bundesliga 2 side SpVgg Greuther Fürth have voted in favour of reverting the club’s name back to SpVgg Fürth from 2027/28 onwards.

At the Bundesliga 2 side’s Sportpark Ronhof | Thomas Sommer stadium on 8 November, 1,867 (88.3 percent) of the present members voted in favour of reverting back to the club's former name, surpassing the 75 percent of votes needed.

“Our members have ensured a clear result,” said president Volker Heißmann. “I thank everyone who participated in the meeting.

“My appreciation goes to the initiative that, for many years, campaigned with great dedication and in a factual manner for the name change and thus secured the necessary votes. The board will now prepare the necessary steps to implement the name change as comprehensively as possible at the start of the new season.”

Heißmann further described the result as a “special moment” for many fans while for others, “it’s the loss of a name that meant something to them.”

Three-time champions of Germany between 1914 and 1929, SpVgg Greuther Fürth’s current name stems from a merger with TSV Vestenbergsgreuth - a lower-league club famous for knocking Bayern Munich out the DFB Cup in 1994/95 - in 1996, while the SpVgg (Spielvereinigung) prefix - which remains - translates to ‘sports club’.
