Twice, Tobias Strobl's men had to come from behind after a lightning-fast Karlsruhe start, but Fabian Reese ran the show for the Wolves, claiming two goals and one assist to help his side to what ultimately proved to be a dominant, well-deserved victory.

Wolfsburg triumphed in the teams' most recent encounter in the 2013/14 DFB Cup. Both would end the season in fifth place, with the Wolves qualifying for Europe via the Bundesliga and second-division Karlsruhe missing out on promotion to the top flight.
