For Glatzel, this is his 190th appearance in Bundesliga 2. He made his debut ten years ago for Kaiserslautern, for whom he played his first 19 second-division matches, scoring four goals.

Zielinski has been at the club since summer 2025, but today marks his competitive debut for VfL. The Polish goalkeeper is just 18 years of age and could still be playing in the under-19s.

Lautern without a genuine new signing

Elvedi, who has returned to Kaiserslautern after a six-month loan spell at Fürth, is the only 'new' face at the club; all other players in the starting XI were also present in the second half of the season. The 'real' new signings such as Yardımcı, Frees or Tazemeta are all on the bench.

In Glatzel (94 goals in Bundesliga 2), Reese (48) and Hornby (23), the VfL attack consists entirely of new signings. The trio has a combined tally of 165 second-division goals!

From Wolfsburg's starting XI in the relegation play-off second leg in Paderborn, only two players are in the starting line-up today as well: Souza and Kumbedi. The squad overhaul following relegation was massive, with six new signings in the starting formation, including Angély, who has returned after his loan spell.

Wolfsburg's experienced goal-getter

The 32-year-old veteran is tasked with scoring the goals to fire the Wolves back into Germany's top flight at the first time of asking, but he brings plenty of second division experience with him having plundered 94 goals in 189 matches during time spent between Kaiserslautern, Heidenheim and Hamburg.

Lautern's One to Watch: Thierry Fidjeu-Tazemeta

The Austrian missed the first few games of Borussia Dortmund’s 2025/26 U19 league season through injury but soon hit his stride, registering nine goals and five assists in 14 appearances before joining Kaiserslautern. A technical winger with strong physicality and explosive speed, the 18-year-old could be one of Bundesliga 2's breakout stars in 2026/27.

First second-tier meeting since 1997

Wolfsburg have won eight of the teams’ 24 encounters in all competitions, with Kaiserslautern winning seven. The sides’ only previous second-tier meetings came in 1996/97, when Lautern - who would go on to win the Bundesliga the following season - held the Wolves to a goalless draw in Wolfsburg before cruising to a 4-0 home win. Both teams were promoted at the end of the season.

The Red Devils managed to hold Wolfsburg to a goalless draw on Matchday 24 of the 2011/12 Bundesliga season, but it was not enough to prevent them from slipping into Bundesliga 2 following back-to-back campaigns in the top flight. The Wolves, meanwhile, finished the season in eighth spot.
