Full-time: Bielefeld 2-0 Magdeburg

So, it's Arminia who secure the three points in front of their home crowd. Particularly in the second half, it was a much-improved performance from Bielefeld. Spearheaded by Grodowski, they charted their course for victory not long after the restart. Magdeburg made too many unforced errors in build-up play during the second half, upon which the hosts managed to capitalise.

Ghrieb tries his luck

After a free-kick that wasn't properly cleared, the visitors' right winger gets to the ball. He leaves his opponent for dead with a feint, but his shot flies narrowly past the goal.

Magdeburg without an answer

Since the 75th minute, it's been six shots on goal for Bielefeld to Magdeburg's one. The hosts have been much closer to making it 3-0 than Magdeburg have been to scoring a consolation goal.

Almost 3-0!

Magdeburg are too sloppy in the build-up play and give the ball away carelessly. Kania is played in from the right to the centre. After a quick feint, he shoots with his left foot in the penalty area. But the ball hits the post.

Wörl from distance

The attacker cuts in from the left and tries a shot. However, it lands straight in the arms of Reimann.

The hero departs

With an assist and a goal, Grodowski is the man of the evening. Kania comes on for the final minutes. Felix also comes on for Mehlem.
87'

Final substitution

Hoti comes on for Dzogovic. Will we see high balls to the tall Kosovan now?
85'

Yellow card for Mehlem

The midfield engine of Arminia receives a yellow card for holding Stalmach illegally in the middle of the pitch.
82'

Kersken is there

Atik chips a free-kick from in off the right flank into the penalty area. The Bielefeld keeper rushes out with one fist and clears the ball from the danger zone. In the process, he collides with Breunig, and the Magdeburg striker needs brief treatment for his ribs.
81'

Magdeburg again

It's all too complicated. Atik now pops up more centrally, looking for passing options. But time and again, the visitors need one touch too many and a Bielefeld leg gets in the way.
79'

Kniat also looks to the bench

Momuluh receives the applause of the crowd. On the right side, he won nearly 80% of his more than 20 duels. Young also leaves the pitch, who is surely still ruing his missed shot from a few minutes ago.
77'

Multiple chances

Corboz tries from the edge of the penalty area, but his effort blocked. Wörl grabs the ball and also has a go. His shot is also blocked and deflected for a corner. The corner doesn't produce anything noteworthy.

Three goals already

Last season, Grodowski scored just one goal in 15 matches for Münster in the first half of the Bundesliga 2 campaign, but at Bielefeld, he has managed three goals after just five matchdays.
73'

Quadruple substitution

Fiedler has seen enough. He brings on Ahl-Holmström for Onaiwu, who couldn't maintain his strong first-half performance. With Ulrich coming on for Gnaka too, the midfield is also being set up more offensively.
68'

Will Bielefeld secure the victory?

Thanks to the two quick goals, the hosts seem unlikely to be denied the victory. At the start of the match, the probability of winning was only 45%.

A Bundesliga 2 first!

Last season, Corboz contributed seven goals to Bielefeld's promotion from the 3rd division, and now he scores his first goal in Bundesliga 2.

Grodowski doubles Arminia's advantage!

Grodowski rewards himself for a strong performance so far. He is played in by Mehlem at the halfway line. He gets past Dzogovic on the touchline, breaks into the penalty area, and stays cool in front of Reimann, placing the ball into the net with the outside of his right foot.

Atik plays it back from the left to Gnaka, who is lurking on the right. He lets it through to Mathisen, whose attempt from 30 yards ends up in the upper tier.

Chances starting to come

After the first half took place primarily between the penalty areas, both teams are now finding their way to goal more frequently.

How's he not put that away?!

Momuluh wins the ball inside the Magdeburg penalty area. He cleverly lays it back to Young. With the whole goal at his mercy, he blasts the ball well over the crossbar.
54'

A response in the pipeline?

Atik now seems to want to take control of the match. From the left, he cuts inside and crosses to the far post. Heber takes the ball first-time, but his shot is blocked by Bielefeld. The corner poses further danger, however Stalmach doesn't connect properly with a rebound from outside the box.
52'

Bielefeld take the lead!

Arminia seem to have used the short break to their advantage. Russo plays a free-kick short to Grodowski from in off the right flank, who crosses from the byline. At the far post, Corboz rises high and heads in the opener.

Half-time: Bielefeld 0-0 Magdeburg

It was an intense first 45 minutes, with play going back-and-forth. The technical quality hasn't always been of the highest degree, but there's no doubting the intensity in the transitions was outstanding. The fact that neither side has managed to open the scoring with the chances they've had is astounding, especially as both sides have consistently looked to counterattack as soon as they win back possession.

That was almost it!

There's a simple error in the build-up from Magdeburg on the left side. Young drives the ball forward, plays it into the middle to Grodowski. He dribbles towards the penalty area, makes a turn to shake off the defender, but his right-footed finish misses the goal by mere inches.
42'

They can't seem to hold him

If anything is to happen for the hosts, it's surely to be through Grodowski. This time he powers through on the left. His low cross from the byline doesn't find a teammate, though Reimann was already beaten.
camera-photo

Magdeburg with the chances

It's been a lively match so far, with both teams keeping their foot on the accelerator, but it's Magdeburg who've have had the better finishing opportunities thus far. Most recently, Onaiwu is denied by Großer, who makes a crucial block.
37'

Strong debut for Stalmach

The debutant is having a good game so far, winning 60% of his duels. Stalmach is also the Magdeburg player covering the most ground and has had the best chance of the game so far.
34'

Grodowski again

Momuluh drives the ball forward on the right and Grodowski makes a run into the channel where he is found with a lovely pass. However, he leans back a bit as he takes his shot and the ball flies well over the bar.

Bielefeld with the response

Arminia are by no means on the ropes. Following the counter-attack, which they launch down the left through Grodowski and Wörl, Gnaka just manages to clear a cross from the byline and out of the danger zone.

Doubly close!

Heber wins the ball in midfield and plays Ghrieb through down the right. Arminia's defence is wide open as Ghrieb looks for Breunig at the far post with his low cross. Goalkeeper Kersken is there to meet it with his right hand though. The subsequent corner poses further danger; the ball is flicked on at the near post and flies narrowly past the far corner.
27'

Misunderstanding among the visitors

Magdeburg fail to clear a corner kick cleanly. Onaiwu and Dzogovic can't agree on what to do. Young wins a corner, but it comes to nothing.
24'

Double save

Arminia are all at sea! Großer loses the ball during build-up play. Ghrieb snatches it and lays it off to Onaiwu, who shoots from the edge of the penalty area. Kersken makes the initial save before plucking the rebound out of the air, after which he is fouled by Breunig. It's a let-off for the hosts...
22'

Dominant in the tackles

The visitors are physically holding their own so far. The atmosphere is electric, but on the pitch, they have been able to win more tackles than their opponents.

Magdeburg's defence

Five goals may have been conceded last week, but they're so far stable today. Bielefeld have not been allowed a single shot on goal in the penalty area yet (only two long-range efforts), or a single corner, and Magdeburg are also clearly winning more duels.
18'

Nervy moment

Kersken's pass is a bit too short in the build-up play and Schneider just manages to play the ball back to the keeper. Even after the back pass, the goalkeeper appears unsure, slipping as he attempts a long clearance. However, the Bielefeld mistakes go unpunished.
17'

Hagmann stays switched-on

Magdeburg take a quick free-kick at the centre circle. Gnaka looks for Ghrieb on the right, but Hagmann senses the danger and clears the ball out of play.
14'

Brief interruption

There's a stoppage after Hagmann collides with Heber in midfield. The Arminia player receives treatment but can continue playing.
13'

Magdeburg establishing themselves

Ghrieb and Heber combine down the left and break into the penalty area, but they are met by a compact Arminia defence. With combined efforts, the hosts eventually manage to clear the ball.
camera-photo

Feisty start

After not even 10 minutes played, there have already been 24 duels between Bielefeld and Magdeburg.
8'

Another Bielefeld attack

The home side seem to have a clear plan. Again they recover the ball back quickly in midfield before Grodowski cuts in from the left to the centre. However, his curling shot isn't powerful enough to trouble Reimann.
6'

Hacked down by Mathisen

Grodowski picks the ball up in midfield, isn't challenged and suddenly finds himself about 12 yards from the penalty area. Mathisen can only put in a desperate sliding tackle to halt him, for which he receives a yellow card. The subsequent free-kick from Wörl goes wide of the right post.
4'

Magdeburg striving for control

The hosts have started with an intense press, even looking to put keeper Reimann under pressure. The first half-chance falls to the visitors. A cross from the left half-space looks for Heber, who has slipped in unnoticed at the far post. He doesn't manage to get on the end of it though, resulting in a goal-kick.
2'

Great atmosphere

If the match lives up to the atmosphere in the stands, we can look forward to a real feast for the footballing senses. Both the Magdeburg fans and the Arminia supporters are really giving it their all. Lovely setting for a Friday evening fixture.

Magdeburg team news

After the 5-4 spectacle against Fürth, Magdeburg's coach reshuffles his starting xi in five positions. The two late signings Breunig and Onaiwu come into the starting line-up straight away. Heber is newly available for the first time this season and will be hoping to bring stability the defence. In the holding midfield position, Gnaka is preferred over Hyryläinen, and there's also a first start for Stalmach.

Young with a chance to prove himself

Isaiah Young is handed his first start of the season. In his previous three appearances as a substitute, he scored two goals - most recently the equaliser against Braunschweig and the late winner against Werder Bremen in the DFB Cup.

Momuluh's Arminia comeback

Monju Momuluh is playing for Arminia for the first time this season. The new arrival from Hannover (27 Bundesliga appearances for the 96ers) has been a Bielefeld player before - in the second half of the 2023/24 season, when he made 11 appearances in the third division for Arminia, scoring one goal.
camera-photo

Mitch Kniat on facing Magdeburg

"Magdeburg played a solid Bundesliga 2 season last year. Now there has been a small upheaval with a new head coach. They are a team that, similar to us, like to have possession of the ball. In defence, they still have some gaps at times, which you can see from the goals they have already conceded."
camera-photo

Markus Fiedler on facing Bielefeld

"They will definitely be a tough nut to crack for us. Bielefeld are a team that can generate enormous power, especially at home. We know that it will require a top performance."

Mehlem's Magdeburg history

Marvin Mehlem has played against Magdeburg four times in Bundesliga 2 and won all four prior encounters as a Darmstadt and Paderborn player.

Another 3-1?

Both encounters in Bielefeld ended 3-1. In November 2022, Arminia celebrated their only ever victory against Magdeburg with this scoreline, while in February 2019, Magdeburg likewise won here by the same margin.

The last encounter

The last time both teams faced each other was on Matchday 34 of the 2022/23 season, when Magdeburg won 4-0 at home, with Baris Atik among the goalscorers. Because of this defeat, Bielefeld missed out on survival in the division and were relegated via the play-offs against Wiesbaden.

Duel number five

Bielefeld and Magdeburg are meeting for only the fifth time in a competitive match, with the only previous encounters also taking place in Bundesliga 2 (2018/19 and 2022/23).
