Full-time: Bochum 1-2 Preußen Münster

In the end, two stunners from Mees were enough for the win as Bochum gave it their all, but struggled to create any real opportunities for an equaliser. The win sees Preußen jump to sixth for the time being, whereas Bochum are in freefall.

The goal stands! 1-1!

Passlack dynamically beats Bolay on the right wing and delivers a sharp cross into the middle. Wätjen is in an offside position but doesn't go for the ball. Hofmann rushes in at the far post and tries to push the ball over the line. Ter Horst also slides in for the ball, which somehow pinballs into the Münster goal. Hofmann was likely the last to touch it. Felix Prigan reviews the scene to check if Wätjen was actively involved, but awards the goal.

A goal against Nürnberg last time out and now some outstanding build-up play for the opener - new signing Marvin Schulz was primarily brought in as a defensive stabiliser, but he is proving plenty capable going forward as well.

Dangerous again!

Mees sends Batista Meier through down the left with a brilliant pass to the byline. The forward tries to drill the ball sharply into the middle, but Passlack slides in to block, nearly beating his own keeper in the process. The ball only hits the side netting, though.

GOOOAL! Brilliant from Mees!

A wonderful goal from the visitors. After a slow build-up with numerous passes, Schulz sends Mees through on the left-hand side with a stunning pass. The 29-year-old drives into the penalty area, leaves Lenz for dead with a feint and finds the corner with precision. Timo Horn had no chance.

Almost a catastrophe

Bochum press aggressively from a Münster goal kick, causing panic in Münster's defence before a loose back pass drifts inches wide of the post. The corner from Bochum doesn't come to anything.
13'

Big chance for Schulz

Ter Horst intercepts a pass at the halfway line and joins the attack. The full-back slips the ball through at the perfect moment to the sprinting Schulz, who gets free to shoot from just inside the penalty area. Horn is beaten, but the attempt goes a metre wide of the left post.
11'

Attractive move

Amenyido beats his opponent on the left wing with a beautiful trick and plays a sharp ball into the penalty area. Horn, however, is alert and intercepts the pass before the onrushing Mees.

A first attack from the visitors

Batista Meier has space on the left flank to deliver a cross, but Vogt heads it away from the danger zone without any problems.
6'

A bit over-motivated

Onyeka has obviously set himself high standards for his starting eleven debut. He chases down Jaeckel and takes him out after the Preußen defender had already played the ball. Free kick for Münster in their own half.

Almost a dream debut!

After a strong ball recovery, Wittek sends Holtmann down the left wing, who then serves Onyeka on the half-left in the penalty area. Schenk manages to parry his powerful shot with both fists. The rebound flies towards Hofmann, who attempts an acrobatic bicycle kick, but it goes well wide of the right post.
2'

First long ball

Bero looks for the young Onyeka on the left wing for the first time, but the pass is played too long. Goal kick Münster.
Kick-off!

Multiple debuts possible

Many players are missing for VfL, so three youngsters are included in a senior matchday squad for the first time: Darnell Keumo (17), Lirim Jashari (19) and Daniel Hülsenbusch (20). For the visitors, Niko Koulis returns after a two-match suspension for a red card, but only makes the bench.

Onyeka gets his chance

Francis Onyeka was brought on as a substitute in the 2-1 defeat at Schalke, and the 18-year-old now gets to start for the first time. The Leverkusen loanee comes into the team for the injured Strompf, but is likely to take up a position much further forward.

One change for the visitors

After earning their first win of the season against Nuremberg last week, there is one change in the starting lineup for Preußen Münster. Amenyido replaces Lokotsch in the XI.

What Alexander Ende said

"We're looking forward to the match in Bochum. For me personally, it's close to home, I've seen Bundesliga players there as a spectator. I'm also looking forward to seeing Dieter Hecking as I know him from my time at Gladbach. It will be a great atmosphere and a good opponent."
camera-photo

What Dieter Hecking said

"Münster have a different playing style after the change of manager. They're doing very well so far, showing strong tackling and running stats. Up front they're versatile, and play very good football. We can play flexibly, as the Schalke match proved, and now there are opportunities for players who haven't started before."

Hecking's Münster record

Hecking last faced Preußen in 2001/02, winning twice 4-1 with Lübeck in the Regionalliga.

A Gladbach past

The two coaches know each other from their time at Mönchengladbach. When Dieter Hecking was in charge of the first team there from December 2016 to summer 2019, Alexander Ende was assistant coach of the reserve team under Arie van Lent.

The last Preußen victory

Münster last won against Bochum in March 1969, earning a 3-2 victory in Bochum in the Regionalliga under Richard Schneider.

Most recent encounter

Since then, there has only been one competitive match, on 8 August 2008 in the DFB Cup, when fourth-tier Münster (under manager Roger Schmidt) narrowly missed out on an upset, only losing on penalties against first division Bochum after 120 goalless minutes.

A long time ago

Bochum and Münster are playing in the same league for the first time in 55 years! The last time was in 1970/71 in the Regionalliga West (then the second-highest division), where they drew 1-1 in Bochum and VfL won 3-1 in Münster. Bochum were promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time that season.
