Torsten Lieberknecht returns to his former side for the first time since his departure in September 2024. He coached them from July 2021, achieved promotion to the Bundesliga with them. Since leaving Darmstadt he has faced the Lilies twice, celebrating two home victories with Kaiserslautern (each time after being behind).

The Red Devils' last and only away win at Darmstadt happened eight years ago under special circumstances. On 24th January 2018, the match was abandoned at 0-0 because Lautern coach Jeff Strasser had to be taken to hospital. On 21st February 2018, the match was replayed, with Kaiserslautern winning 2-1.

The last encounter in Darmstadt saw the Lilies win 5-1, with Fraser Hornby scoring twice.

In their previous encounter this season, the Lilies led 1-0 until the 84th minute. Lautern then scored three times to cause one of only two Darmstadt defeats of the season.
