Braunschweig have done it

But only just - the hosts' overpowering the ten men in extra-time, notably with a lot of help from their goalkeeper. Braunschweig survive in Bundesliga 2, Saarbrücken will have to regroup for a promotion push in 2025/26.

Hoffmann again

Without their goalkeeper, Braunschweig would be playing in the third division next season - he leaps to tip Schmidt's left-foot shot over the crossbar.

It's all over now!!!

Menzel came up for the corner, but Hoffmann has it. He clears long, and Philippe rolls the ball into the empty net to make it 4-2 on aggregate and it's all over now. Brilliant assist from Hoffmann.
115'

More pressure

Braunschweig are buckling. Saarbrücken have a corner on the left - Sané gets it away. Comes back in from Civeja, headed out once more. Visitors still have it, it comes back in, dangerous low ball, but it's cleared. This is so nervy.
113'

Saarbrücken denied

The ten men - though you wouldn't know it - are really causing all sorts of problems. This game is not over yet...Here's Civeja. Brilliant left-foot strike and matched by Hoffmann again. Another massive save!
112'

Hoffmann save

The former Bayern man makes a smart reaction stop to deny Krüger at the near post. That could be the stop that keeps Braunschweig in the second division.

Scramble

A low ball comes into the Braunschweig box, Brünker has it, can't get the shot away, he tees up a teammate but the ball rolls wide of goal. What a chance!

Half-time in extra-time

Lots of discussions with the officials from Saarbrücken who want to know why there were additional minutes in the first half of extra-time. Those additional seconds did make all the difference as Braunschweig have a 3-2 aggregate lead.
camera-photo

Braunschweig break through

Surely just seconds to go until the break in extra-time. Braunschweig fans want the ball in the box, here it comes, there's a scramble, Sané shot comes in, blocked, handball? Drops for Di Michele Sanchez, who sweeps it past Menzel at the near post and the hosts have the goal they need.
103'

All hands to the pump

The visitors have all 10 men behind the ball - can they keep fatigue as well as Braunschweig at bay? Actually, the hosts are not creating anything of note in the opposition box.
103'

Tempelmann trouble

The influential Braunschweig midfielder is struggling with an injury - not sure he's going to see out the match on the pitch.
102'

Sané chance

Menzel leaps and can only get a slight touch on a cross from the left - it drops for Sané, who snatches at the chance and fires behind from a tight angle.
101'

Tachie shot

The substitute gets a shot away, but it's deflected up and over the crossbar of Menzel's goal.
100'

Tachie shot

The substitute cuts in from the left and fires goal wards. Menzel watches it carefully as the ball loops onto the top of his net... corner...Philippe's ball is a decent one, but no one in a yellow shirt can make a meaningful connection.
98'

Huge save

Saarbrücken launch the ball into the box again. It drops for Krüger, who has the perfect first touch before firing golwards - Hoffmann sticks out an arm at his near post and blocks. Braunschweig are hanging on here.
96'

Sonnenberg takes up rugby

The Saarbrücken defender wrestles Szabó to the ground just inside his own half - that's one of the easier free-kicks Mr Stieler has ever awarded.
94'

Side-netting

The free-kick is clipped to the back post, Krauße gets on the end of it, but there was too much on the ball and he can only find the side-netting. Some hopeful cheers from the Braunschweig fans, but it's gone the wrong side of the post.

Late drama?

Braunschweig pressing well into added time. Can they find the goal that would end this tie? There's a huge crowd of players in the Saarbrücken box...the ball comes in. Big appeal for handball. It does hit Bischel's arm...but Mr Stieler waves play on after a VAR review.

Extra-time coming up

And perhaps penalties if we're all square after the additional 30 minutes. How much of a toll will it take on Saarbrücken to play with a man fewer?
90'
+ 1

Penalty?

No, but it is a red card. Di Michele Sanchez gets beyond Rizzuto, the Saarbrücken man brings the substitute down just outside the area, and though it's not a penalty, it is a second yellow card. If this goes to extra-time, the visitors will be down to 10 men.

Scramble

Braunschweig come forward down the right, Tachie looks to spin on it in the middle, a shot comes in, strikes a white-shirted body. Comes out for a cross, Philippe rises, but his header is easy for Menzel. But that's the first home attack of any note for quite some time.
87'

Saarbrücken support

The home fans are in stunned silence and the away supporters are making all the noise. As you might expect.
84'

And we're all square!

Philippe can't make the most of a break forward, and Saarbrücken counter. Lovely ball down the right channel to Schmidt, his cross comes in and Brünker sends a firm header past Hoffmann and it's 2-2 on aggregate.

Civeja strike

The substitute battles his way to a shooting opportunity, it takes a skid off the slick surface but it's straight at Hoffmann, who gathers cleanly. And most of the stadium breathes a sigh of relief.

Just wide

Philippe does well to bring the ball forward, skips away from a couple of challenges, finds Tempelmann, who then picks out Szabó...measures his shot...skips just wide of the far post with Menzel at full stretch. That wasn't far away.
camera-photo

Braunschweig to bounce back?

How will the hosts handle this pressure now? Do they press forward to try and get the goal that would surely kill this tie off? Or defend stoically to hold on to the advantage they have? Tough call for Pfitzner.

Krüger, the former Braunschweig man, will take this...and tucks it away! Straight down the middle as Hoffmann dives to his right, and it's 2-1 on aggregate.

Braunschweig in control

The yellow shirts have the ball and the upper hand - they work it around beautifully, and Tempelmann has it again. He's brought down by Rizzuto just outside the penalty area, slap bang in the middle of the pitch. Here's a great free-kick opportunity.

51'

Gómez chance

Bichsel is caught in possession by Gómez, that's dangerous. The Braunschweig man can get a shot away, but Sonnenberg is in the way to deflect the ball behind. Bičakčić gets a head to the subsequent corner, but it's not a clean contact and it's smashed away.

Smoke from the stands drifts across the pitch and referee Tobias Stieler holds up play for 3 minutes...and we're back underway.

Second half kicks off

Here we go again folks. Braunschweig looking good to stay in Bundesliga 2 right now, and even the torrential rain and rumbling thunder doesn't look like it'll poop their party. One change for both teams with Szabó and Krahn on for Polter and Fahrner respectively.

camera-photo

Goalless at the break

Chances few and far between, plenty of industry, not enough inspiration in the final third. Polter had the best chance, and should have put Braunschweig in front and all but out of sight. We still await that crucial first goal.
45'

Fahrner flummoxed

The wing-back is not having a great half. First, he loses the ball to Conteh in a dangerous position on the left and then brings down the lively Braunschweig man to give the hosts a late first-half chance with this free-kick. It comes to nothing though.
44'

Fahrner in the book

He can't catch Tempelmann and hauls back the Braunschweig midfielder - that's the second yellow of the game, both for the visitors.
41'

Visitors comfortable

Saarbrücken are looking comfortable enough at the back, but they do need to find some quality in the final third. They need to find the net tonight, Braunschweig don't.

40'

Becker booked

The defender takes one for the team to stop a potentially dangerous counter-attack.
camera-photo

Wasted opportunity

Fahrner does brilliantly to shake off two yellow shirts, he's got plenty of options in the middle, but can't find any of them...Saarbrücken come again and Vasiliadis clips a left-foot shot over the crossbar.
35'

Gómez chance

The Tempelmann-Conteh connection works again as the former releases the latter down the left. Low ball into the box, Gómez's first touch takes him beyond Sonnenberg, but Menzel manages to stop a low shot squirming underneath him.
32'

Philippe chance

The ball loops forward from a midfield challenge and Philippe is through, one on one with Menzel. The Braunschweig forward doesn't look confident and shoots low but weakly at the keeper's feet. Replays show that even had he scored, VAR would likely have given him offside.
31'

Vasiliadis almost

The midfielder makes a diagonal run into the box but can't quite get on the end of a useful-looking ball.

Tempelmann influence

Conteh has the ball down the left, he finds Tempelmann in a central area - he looks to ping a first time ball into the path of Gomez, but Sonnenberg snuffs out the danger. He read the pass beautifully.

24'

Advantage Saarbrücken?

In three of the last four years, it's the 3. Liga side that has won this tie. The last Bundesliga 2 side to save their second-tier status is Nuremberg back in 2020.
22'

Mid-half lull

Both teams have dropped the tempo and the quality of their play - the fans are making a tremendous noise, but on the pitch, things have gone a bit quiet for now.
17'

Midfield battle

Tempelmann receives the ball just inside his own half and smoothly accelerates away, but Vasiliadis pursues him and knocks the Braunschweig man off the ball. That's going to be a one-on-one duel to watch.
camera-photo

Sterile possession?

The visitors have had a lot of the ball, but haven't managed to make anything of it when they've reached the final third. Fahrner, the Saarbrücken wing-back, wastes another ball as he puts it straight out of play.
13'

Conteh countered

Tempelmann, who's been brilliant so far, snaps onto a loose ball and feeds Conteh on the left. He tries three times to force the ball across - it's another corner. Philippe takes it, but it's headed away...
10'

Big miss

Conteh goes past Fahrner on the left, bends in a brilliant ball. Polter is at the back post, surely must score...but sends his first-time effort well wide of the goal. Head in hands stuff for a man with over 100 Bundesliga appearances.
8'

First opening

Fantastic ball curled out wide for Multhaup to race onto wide right. Promising first-time ball across the six-yard line, but Krüger can't get there. First half-chance of the game created.
7'

Transition threat

Saarbrücken give the ball away inside the hosts' half, and the yellow shirts of Braunschweig stream forward at real pace. Conteh again can't make anything of it, but that was an impressive counter-attack.
4'

Saarbrücken pushing

The visitors do need to dictate the game here, and in their all-white away kit, are doing just that with a fast-paced start. But for all the pace to their play, there's not enough precision just yet.
2'

Conteh to the fore

Conteh receives the ball on the left, tries to force the ball across, but it's blocked and we have our first corner of the game. When it comes into the box, the whistle sounds for a foul and that's a Saarbrücken free-kick.
Kick-off!

We're underway

And here we go after a slight delay, but there's 90 minutes (and maybe more) for a place in Bundesliga 2.

Braunschweig injury news

"Stay up together" is the message when you head to the Braunschweig website - can their fans help them get over the line tonight?

Head-to-head

These teams have now met 25 times. Braunschweig have the edge with 11 wins to eight, with the other six ending in draws. The last meeting prior to the first leg was three years ago in the third tier, with Saarbrücken prevailing 2-0.

Braunschweig - how they got here

Up against it for much of the campaign, Braunschweig managed to lift themselves out of the relegation zone down at the business end, only to fall back into the play-off spot on the penultimate weekend. That left the Lions needing to better Preußen Münster's result on the final weekend, but it wasn't to be. A heavy home loss to Nuremberg, coupled with Preußen's draw in Ulm, sealed their play-off fate.
camera-photo

Saarbrücken - how they got here

Lady Luck was certainly on Saarbrücken's side on the final day of the 3. Liga season. Fourth at the start of play, they came from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund's reserves and climb into the play-off spot at the expense of Energie Cottbus, who lost at home to Ingolstadt.

Saarbrücken fans to travel in numbers

Despite it being an away game, the Saarbrücken fans will be hoping to create plenty of atmosphere of their own as they will be bringing over 2,000 fans to the 23,325 capacity Eintracht-Stadion.
camera-photo

Marc Pfitzner on the second leg

"Of course, the starting position is good, but we cannot and must not rest on our laurels. We have the necessary respect for Saarbrücken. [...] Together, we will do everything we can as the Blue & Yellows to ensure that we can play in Bundesliga 2 again next season."
camera-photo

Alois Schwartz on the second leg

"It's about finding a balance between stability and attack. We have to score two goals, and to do that, we need to be active in the opponent's penalty area. We want to play with courage."
camera-photo

Manuel Zeitz: "We will give our all"

"There's no point in making grand statements now. We will be able to play a little more freely in the return leg because we don't have much to lose. We've been written off a few times this season but we definitely believe in our chances. We will give our all. We'll see on Tuesday whether it's enough."
camera-photo

Sebastian Polster: "Clarity and structure"

"Last weekend was emotional and, of course, difficult for everyone due to the change of coach. But the important thing is that we accepted it and created clarity and structure with the new coaching team right from the start. We implemented that well today and now have to finalise it on Tuesday. Of course, the first step is important in a relegation play-off, but on Tuesday we have to approach the game in exactly the same way as we did today."
camera-photo

Alois Schwartz reflects on the first leg

"I'm obviously not happy with how the game went. We didn't play that well in the first half. Chances were at a premium, but we were able to restrict Braunschweig's strength, which is to counter. But then we conceded on the break after Flo Krüger missed the chance to put us ahead. Things were more open after that but we didn't manage to play our game. Today's meeting rightly went Braunschweig's way."
camera-photo

Marc Pfitzner reflects on the first leg

"I'm very happy with how the game went and with my team's performance. We knew what to expect. It went very well for us as a first leg. I'm pleased we can take two goals back to Braunschweig thanks to our big strength, counter-attacking. But it's only half-time. We have to take this success and now focus on Tuesday."

What is the play-off?

Bundesliga 2's play-off differs from more conventional fixtures referred to as play-offs that often feature four teams contesting a semi-final and a final. In Germany, the teams who finish 16th in Bundesliga 2 and third in 3. Liga contest the two-legged promotion/relegation play-off - known in German simply as the 'Relegation'.
